NEW INTERVIEW: "FORGOTTEN will always be Indonesian Band" (Addy Gembel interview), 19/8/2015

Left to Right: Kieran James (Busuk Webzine), Popo Demons Damn, and Addy Gembel @ Bandung, November 2012.
INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

Addy Gembel @ Bulgaria, 2015
Kieran James: 1 How are you enjoying the life in Bulgaria?

Addy Gembel (vokalis FORGOTTEN): 1. I really enjoy it here. I stay in Sliven, a small town. Everything is clean and no traffic jam like in Bandung. The people are nice and they are very curious about my country. Nice food, beautiful park, nice beer but I don't know if I can survive in the winter [smile emoticon].

2 Do you plan to live in Bulgaria or this is just a holiday?

2. We still don't know about our plan. We come only for holiday and it is not easy to find a job in here.

3 What is happening with FORGOTTEN band at the moment? Will they carry on with new vocalist, split-up or you will keep on as vocalist?

3. The band keeps moving on. We still share about our musical work. I'm still making lyrics and the other members are still making music. We prepare a new album for next year 2016.

4 Did you ever think of relocating FORGOTTEN to Bulgaria and starting with a new set of Bulgarian musicians?

4. Nope. Forgotten will be always in Indonesia.

5 What do you think of trendy bands rising up high up on the bills in Bandung such as REVENGE THE FATE and ALONE AT LAST? This is a new development for me as when I first went to Bandung in 2011 those bands were still very small and the fests were 100% brutal death.

5. I think all the bands do the same thing like those bands. That's the way to survive if you wanna make music as a 'job'. Every band in Bandung wants to be famous and to make a lot of money. It's not about trends. It's about hard work and giving your soul to what you love.

6 Are there any young Indonesian bands you are following with interest?

6. Mud Reaper, Taring, Locust King, Saffar, Kaluman.

7 What is your comment about JASAD and BURGERKILL playing in Europe and do you feel a little sad that your band seems to have been forgotten (bad joke yes)?

7. I'm proud for them. It's like fuck yeaaah...finally! They are all my friends since I was 16. We grew up together and now I see them playing in Europe, for me it's like a dream come true. I'm very proud!

JASAD @ Czech Republic, 2015
8 Can you name us some Indonesian bands that you really love that you think should have had big success but did not achieve it (for whatever reason)?

8. The Cruel, Tcukimay, Rottenomicon, Djin, Revenge, Hell Crust, Godz Digger.

9 How is your wife Inna doing these days and please send her my regards?

9. She's good. She is busy with her job and taking care of our daughter. I will send your regards.

10 Last question: Name me your favorite three frontmen (lead vocalists) for a live show in Bandung metal scene (live only, do not consider their performances on studio albums).

10. Man Jasad, Lookass Tcukimay, Kinoy Undergod.

11. Thankyou.

11. You are welcome.
FORGOTTEN band, 1997, Future Syndrome era. Left to Right: Addy Gembel (vocals), Dadang "Kudung" (drums), Zoteng Kampret (guitar), Dadan Kardun (bass), and Ferly (guitar) (now Jasad & Kaluman).

SINGLE REVIEW: BATOSAY (Jakarta Power Metal) - "Eagle Hunt", 8/10/2015

Left to Right: Renggo Mawadah (soldier metal-lover); Rhona (Batosay Vokalis); Erick Mortis (Anastasya Bassist); and Reddy (Batosay Bassist). The sky is always blue in Power-metal Land even in Jakarta!
Batosay's Eagle Hunt is a great alternative to the ones who miss the good old-school power metal. The song start with powerful guitars, being followed by more nice guitar riffs and solid drumworks. A short keyboard line is also present, but the sound keeps it's more straightforward direction for the longest part of the song, which is really good, considering how crowded Power Metal's sound has become nowadays. I am a big fan of giant bombastic songs with orchestral tracks to the bones, but it is really nice to have an alternative to this style where we can enjoy the most of a more clean, guitar-driven song. And talking about Batosay's work, those are guitars which are pleasant to listen to, the leads are absolutely delightful and the solo is just like any power metal catchy single should be: full of energy and intention. Batosay delivers an excellent guitar work and, complemented with the also excellent bass work, we have a recipe for success. Vocal-wise, the singer [Rhona] shows a lot of potential and a very beautiful voice color on the lower tones, showing that he has a hidden power which can be uncovered on his full-body voice, but this power is being hindered by the constant and, if you allow me to say, unnecessary use of high pitched notes. In some cases less is more and I can see his voice growing and beautiful new aspects of it being uncovered if the super-high head voiced notes became more of an ornament than a constant through his work. Overall, I give a big "YES" to Batosay's Eagle Hunt and can't wait to listen to their upcoming EP [by Drake Chrisdensen for BUSUK CHRONICLES].

BAND BIO. Batosay formed in 2006 is Power Metal from Indonesia based in Ciamis, they will release their first EP "Eagle Hunt" via Interlude Records. Containing 6 songs taken from their single last year and one single release in 2015 with lyrical theme about love and fantasy. Release date and artwork will be revealed soon.

EP Tracklist: 1. Eagle Hunt 2. Last Fortune 3. Lost Angel 4. Your Mistake 5. Horizon 6. Horizon (New Version)

A special thanks to: UCIK (Fauzi Nurul Amin) for providing this information.

CLASSIC INTERVIEW: Fadly of FEAR talks with VALERIAN, 26/1/14 (Surabaya Crossover Thrash)

My interview with Fadly of Fear (Surabaya thrash-metal crossover), Inferno Music Studio & Rock Shop, Surabaya, 26 January 2014
Interpretation where necessary by: Dimas (Valerian Guitarist) & Verrel (Valerian Drummer)
Extra Comments and Extra Questions by: Dimas & Verrel
Fear is: Fadly – Vocal; Prass – Guitar; Lauren - bass; and Keti - drums

Jack Frost: First please tell us the history of the band...
Fadly: Actually Fear is a side-project band mixed with other bands. The band Fear was formed in 2012. The band’s genre is thrash-metal crossover influenced by Municipal Waste and Violator. When we were formed we directly created our own songs. We went to the recording studio and created our own mini-album EP Rage Em All.

JF: How many songs on the album?
F: Just two, an EP. Usually when we have a live concert we cover Slayer, Toxic Holocaust, and Suicidal Tendencies. In the middle of 2013, between May and June, we promoted our own mini-album in Bali and Java.

Verrel (Valerian Drummer): How was the reaction?
F: Good. We played in Surabaya, Sidoarjo, Kediri, Jakarta, and Solo.

JF: Which label released the EP?
F: Self-released, only 100 copies.

JF: What are your plans for the future of the band?
F: We plan for a full album. We will finish it by the middle of the year.

Dimas (Valerian Guitarist): Why did you choose crossover thrash-metal? Thrash is rare in Surabaya.
F: We want to be different from the other bands.

Interviewers Dimas Valerian (left) and Verrel Valerian
Verrel: What is your favourite thrash-metal album?
F: Kill Em All.

Verrel: Why?
F: I think it is the best album by Metallica.

JF: Other favourite albums?
F: Municipal Waste – Art of Partying and Warbringer – Waking into Nightmares.

JF: Your favourite band in Surabaya?
F: Devadata (hardcore).

JF: What do you think about the metal community in Surabaya?
F: There is a gap within the community in Surabaya. Black-metal, death-metal, and power-metal each have their own communities. It’s not really integrated.

JF: Have you got any other bands or side-projects?
F: Humanure (grindcore) and Bvas (stoner rock).

JF: How do you think the Surabaya scene can improve?
F: We should be more united. Fear does not play only in the metal scene but also in the mainstream scene. We play anywhere. We are not identified only with the metal scene. Fear will play anywhere including school parades and cultural festivals such as Surabaya Expo. So we can show the audience, ordinary people, that this is metal. Whether they like it or not is not a big deal. We showcase the music to the audience – this is me, this is Fear.

JF: Do you know Busuk Webzine and do you have any comment?
F: I saw it on Facebook. My comment is that it is good. It’s great because it covers any kind of bands.

JF: How many songs are there for the new album?
F: Ten.

JF: How many are ready now?
F: Four songs are totally finished.

JF: Do you have a title yet?
F: Rage the Lightning.

Verrel (Valerian Drummer): What are the lyrical themes?
F: Social things and politics.

Verrel: Please explain more what you mean by “social”...
F: Daily life.

JF: Struggle?
F: Ya, the lyrics tell about the struggle of people in Indonesia – how they struggle in their life...

JF: What is the language of the lyrics?
F: Mix of Bahasa Indonesian and Inggris.

JF: Have you got any favourite band from Bandung?
F: Alice (hardcore punk, Celtic punk).

JF: Lastly, what is your message to the fans?

F: Keep honest in making music and in all other things in life!

CLASSIC INTERVIEW: "Believe in Satan but not God, that's ridiculous man" (Samier Tengorak Interview)

TENGKORAK band with guitarist Samier second from left.
My interview with Samier of Tengkorak, Inferno Music Studio & Rock Shop, Surabaya, 26 January 2014
Interpretation where necessary by: Dimas (Valerian Guitarist) & Verrell (Valerian Drummer)
Expert Comments and Questions by: Dimas & Niza (Climaxeth / Osiris Vocalist)
(Note: Samier is based in Surabaya but the other members of Tengkorak are based in Jakarta)

Jack Frost (Busuk Webzine): First of all tell us your life story, just a short introduction...

Samier: Love story?

JF: The history of Tengkorak then, just briefly...

S: The band was established in 1993. I joined in 2002. At that time Tengkorak just wrote some political lyrics, corruption – not about jihad or anything like that. We started writing about Islam and jihad and topics like that in 2007. It’s in our third album Agenda Suram. We write about jihad because we feel lots of westerners believe that Islam equals to terrorism.  It happened because of 9-11. We started to think how to counter that statement; Islam is not equal to terrorism.

JF: OK, please tell us more about the band’s philosophy and vision?

S: It comes from our [personal] philosophy itself. We have faith in Allah, we believe Islam; it’s a good religion, not a terrorist. We should tell about the truth. A lot of kids in Indonesia, especially in Jakarta, at that time were starting to doubt their beliefs so we counter that. A lot of bands say they don’t believe in God; some of them are fake you know. If they don’t believe God they don’t believe Satan. If they believe Satan but don’t believe God, it’s ridiculous, man! So we tell the truth. We want the kids who watch us to continue to believe their religion. Although they like metal they should not accept the lifestyle.

JF: What are the things wrong with metal lifestyle and what things are OK?

S: A lot of metal fans here say that you are not metal if you are not drunk; you are not metal if you are not tattooed; it happens over the years. If you live in Indo you don’t have to take that lifestyle if you like metal. You have your own lifestyle. As a child you studied your religion, you prayed, it was like that. If you like metal you should not leave what you believe. If you believe it is not correlated with your music. Music is just entertainment. If you like horror movie it does not mean you are a killer or something like that. Don’t adopt the western lifestyle. If the lifestyle doesn’t match with your religion don’t take it.

JF: What about black tee-shirt and long hair?

S: It’s OK for me; it’s not OK for some. In the end we realize the music has power to state our message. If people have a bad message in their music the metal fans think it’s OK. Why then is the good music not OK? In Indonesia it’s different to other [western] nations, you still have religion.

JF: Do you think Indonesia is too easygoing about the religion compared to, for example, Malaysia?

S: Maybe in Malaysia the government is based n Islam but in Indonesia it is a secular government. We are a Muslim majority here but the government is not Islamic; it is too American you know...

Samier Tengkorak and Jack Frost (Kieran James)
JF: Do you know about the Christian metal scene and what do you think about it?

S: I think it’s good. They do it for the Christian people; to help the people to still believe. Metal does not have to have a correlation with your belief; it’s a different thing, it’s just your hobby maybe. Lately metal has had a message which a lot of kids have adopted.

JF: What is your comment about the band Deicide?

S:  I read an interview with Glen Benton; he said he was not serious with the lyrics; it’s just a gimmick.

JF: At least the early lyrics seemed to be quite serious?

S: Maybe he changed as a person you know. He said you should pay for your rent, for your family. He said the lyrics are not serious. I don’t know if he lied or not. I think the music is good but the lyrics are not good for me.

JF: OK, I want to ask are you musician first or preacher first?

S: I’m just a musician [laughs] but I realize that music should have a good message. It becomes our responsibility - to our audience especially; it’s important for us.

JF: Do you aim to convert the non-Muslims to become Muslim?

S: No, never.

JF: What do you think of Niza wearing jilbab [hijab] on the stage?

S: It’s difficult to say you know [laughs].

Dimas (Valerian Guitarist): For me it’s not important Jack.

JF: What is the reaction to your band?

S: We had a lot of negative feedback in Jakarta especially thinking we want to...they say don’t mix religion with metal.

JF: What do you think of Jihad, for example, singing about Islamic philosophy and also saying “we are secular band”?

S:  It’s stupid you know. Are you afraid to say what you believe? Why are we afraid to say what we believe?

Samier Tengkorak and Jack Frost (interview @ Inferno Studio)
JF: What bands are you most influenced by?

S: There are a lot of bands you know. The main influence is Napalm Death for the music.

JF: What are the future plans for Tengkorak?

S: We should make a new album. Our last album was 2007 you know. It’s been too long. We continue to deliver an Islamic message; we continue to proclaim the message that Islam does not equal terrorist. We hope our audience can still believe what they believe even though they still like metal music.

JF: What do you think of Indo metal musicians dedicating their albums to Allah but using 666 number and pentagram symbol?

S: It’s stupid; they don’t know what they believe. They say “in music don’t believe Allah”, why?

JF: How is Purgatory different from Tengkorak?

S: Purgatory lyrics have a message from the Al-Quran; it puts quotations into the lyrics, but Tengkorak does not.

JF: Do you want to tour in the Middle East and did you get any feedback from there?

S: Not yet.

Dimas (Valerian): In your opinion what do you think about the metal scene in Surabaya?

S: A lot of the community people here do not know the meaning of community itself. They think it is like a gang. A community should un by itself. If you are a writer you should write about your metal scene or maybe you have a label...

JF: What do you think about the Ariel Peterpan court case?

S: People like Ariel; it’s a new phenomenon.

JF: It copies from the west as well, yes?

Niza (Climaxeth / Osiris Vocalist): Yes.

S: He is very popular right now, more than before. He is more successful with the new band. It’s a prophet’s name Noah. They go to imam and say “what is the best name for my band?” It’s true.

JF: What do you think of the culture of hardcore genre?

S: I think it’s good because if we learn religion you will find that you should respect family, parents, mother, sister, etc. All the good things come from our religion, your religion...I think a hardcore band should say about religion. Our culture came from religion. If they don’t say that a lot of people think hardcore is a religion. I read that it says metal has become a religion. Wendy of Rolling Stone magazine said hardcore lyrics are inspiring. Wendy is a Muslim. I told her that if you want inspiration you should read Al-Quran.

TENGKORAK with Samier first on left
JF: John Yoedi and I took the 666 out of the Busuk Webzine URL, what do you think about that?

S: Congratulations [smiles]!

JF: Do you have any political philosophy about left-wing or right-wing?

S: No, I don’t know much about that.

JF: What are some good young bands in Indonesia?

S: Climaxeth, Valerian, lots of good bands...Full Fontal (hardcore)

JF: Do you hope for new young bands to follow the philosophy and style of Tengkorak?

S: I hope so. If they are Christian or Muslim they should talk about their religion, it becomes about responsibility. Indonesia is not western; we have a religion; stay true to your religion.

JF: What do you think of Jasad singing about Sundanese culture on Rebirth ov Jatisunda album?

S: Jasad also wants to rise up their culture; I think that it is a good thing. They want to make traditional music more popular. I think it’s a good thing to mix metal with traditional music.

JF: What do you think of use of inverted cross symbol by Indonesian metal bands?

S: It’s stupid. We should respect the other religions. Those people just follow; they don’t know the essential meaning of the symbol.

JF: Do you feel the same way as some Christian metalheads who feel caught somewhere between the church and the world?

S: Metal is metal and music is music. It does not mean if you have a faith you should not like the metal music. You have the right to like the metal music.

JF: Did you ever use an imam or theologian to advise you on the lyrics?

S: No.

JF: So to record the new album you will have to go to Jakarta?

S: Yes, I must go to Jakarta for a couple of months to do the rehearsals.

JF: Ok, that is all, thank you very much for interview! Best wishes for the new album.

S: Thank you!
Samier's new grindcore band G.A.S. (SURABAYA).
