CD REVIEW: KALUMAN (Bandung DM) - "Kaluman" CD (2014), by Andrew Sick of Sick Reviews

KALUMAN (Bandung Death Metal) on Bali tour, September 2015
Kaluman (Bandung Death Metal) - Kaluman CD (2014) (Sevared Records)

Formed by members of Jasad, Bleeding Corpse and Turbidity, Kaluman offers their self-titled debut f***ing album including nine songs (one instrumental) and lasting about 40 f***ing minutes! The band performs a Brutal Death F***ing Metal with a big Death Metal side and we can hear some influences from bands like Dying Fetus or their compatriots Absolute Defiance! Kharis
ma Kamal Nurdin (Vocals), Ferli Suferli (Guitar), Daniel Lesmana (Guitar), Adrian Fauzan Rahman (Bass), Asep Rosidin (Drums) are the legendary quintet of Kaluman and doing a good f***ing job on several aspects of their f***ing brutal musick! The production of Kaluman is f***ing great, the mixing is f***ing excellent perhaps less on the side of drums but still not unbearable, totally f***ing killer sound with a very present bass making it a f***ing heavy recording and sounding like a f***ing ton of dynamite! Musically, Kaluman is still f***ing good with a vocals well done, maybe a bit redundant but still f***ing enjoyable, The bass and guitars riffs are very f***ing good at several parts but can be very f***ing annoying and repetitive in many other places and the drums in general is f***ing great at all levels! In my opinion, the songs would have been much f***ing better by cutting off half the time thus eliminating f***ing repetitive, generic and boring moments, but we can also find a big number of great f***ing parts. The two greatest songs already appeared on their demo 2012: "Altar Prostitusi" and "Membusuk Menjadi Sampah" which are f***ing enjoyable in their entirety! Kaluman is recommended for the real passionate in death metal only because for the others it's not a disk to put as priority due to its big lack of brutality! Not Bad F***ing Release! 5/10. [This review was first published by Andrew Sick of Sick Reviews and is used here with his kind permission. Note that Kaluman released its second album The Anthem of Blasphemy on 5 January 2016 via Sevared Records.]
Left to Right: Popo Demons Damn, Bobby Hydro, Kieran James, Zemo Cabalero (at back in red-and-black jacket), Butche from The Cruel (with black Hirax cap), and Aries Kaluman (vocalist Kaluman).

The second Kaluman album The Anthem of Blasphemy was released on 5 January 2016 by Sevared Records (USA).

NEW INTERVIEW: Our interview with INTERNAL LEPROSY (San Fernando Pampanga, Philippines DM)

INTERNAL LEPROSY band from San Fernando Pampanga, Philippines - new EP Judicial Blasphemy out now!
Kieran James (Busuk Chronicles)1: Hi, can you tell me the early history from the formation of the band up to now?
King (INTERNAL LEPROSY): It started back way back in between late 2008 and early 2009 when me and Paolo met. We were recruiting Paolo to do the vocal parts in our band that time. The band didn't work out and we both ended up good friends who share the same interests in music and so we decided to form Internal Leprosy. We wrote songs in Paolo's room and kept them until we found other members. There were line-up changes and people came and went until we set aside the idea of the band because we couldn't find the right people who would fit in perfectly. In 2012, I had a hardcore band. I had a few friends in the scene who put up shows and I decided to contact Paolo and proposed Internal Leprosy to bring it back. Paolo said yes and I made a post on Facebook announcing that we're looking for a drummer. Arron replied and we set up a meet and that was the start of it. Up to now we're still playing at gigs.
Arron: Paolo and King decide to form a band called Internal Leprosy. I saw their post on Facebook that they need a drummer. I left comment to that post. I said: “Can I try because I love to play heavy music?" We jammed after we met and I got the position for drums for the band up to this date.
Paolo: Internal Leprosy was officially formed December of 2014 but we started in 2009. There were a lot of line-up changes and a lot of rehearsing but drummers didn't work out for some reason during those times but it changed when Arron joined our team. He showed some perseverance for being a heavy metal fan and he always wanted to be a better musician and that is something that impressed us. Internal Leprosy began playing gigs after a few jam sessions.

KJ2: How is the response of people to your mini-albums / album / demos?
King: Well we haven't released our EP Judicial Blasphemy yet but we had two songs released online. One of those is "One Killing Nation" which I had made a DIY music video of. People responded very nicely about it and we're really thankful to those guys who supported us on that.
Arron: It’s amazing because they love our EP album in Mexico; they play our songs on their local online radio. Mexican people and Italy support our band and that’s our pleasure to serve them good music.
Paolo: Guys in Mexico were impressed with our EP. Mostly the fans there are fans of raw energy of death/thrash metal. We have no other plans but releasing our first EP for now.

KJ3: What are the most influential bands for you guys in playing music?
King: For me, my list is staggering but the main bands are of course: Slayer, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Decapitated and those grindcore and goregrind bands like Pig Destroyer and Waking the Cadaver just to name a few.
Arron: Deicide, Slayer, Kreator, Nile, Dying Fetus, Cannibal corpse.
Paolo: Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Slayer, any old style metal. I like the rawness of the old-school.

KJ4: What are your future plans for the band?
King: We want to tour and share our music with other countries and keep writing brutal music that metalheads would really enjoy Filipino style.
Arron: To have more albums and to share our music to other countries.

KJ5: Are the songs you create using English or foreign lyrics?
King: We decided to use English for everyone to grasp.
Arron: All of our songs are in English so other countries could understand the meaning of our songs.
Paolo: Since the English is the most recognized language in this planet we will use it to the world to express our thoughts about this f***ed up society and system! But I like to scream out loud using my local language as if the world could understand it, why not?

KJ6: What are the lyrical themes?
King: Gore, violence, horror, political views.
Arron: We are anti government. We kill all the people who abuse our society with our music. Our EP album entitled "Judicial Blasphemy".
Paolo: Gore, corrupt society.

KJ7: Why do you all like to play old-school instead of deathcore or other modern styles?
King: Originally we had that idea to be a brutal breakdown kind of a band but since our old-school influences were too strong and many kids out there were doing those heavy brutal breakdowns already we decided that we should just stick to the roots.
Arron: Old school is the best!
Paolo: For my own personal taste, I want to preserve the raw intense energy of old school metal; we’re not against their new movement. We just want to do the fury of old school style. We have no plans to soften our music. We want it that way as Internal Leprosy.

KJ8: When did you first become fans of metal bands?
King: I was a bit of a late bloomer actually. I grasp a lot of kinds of music. I was really into N.U. metal when I was in high-school so I think it started there.
Arron: Since I was in grade school. I browsed the internet for heavy songs until now I still do some searching to know different bands.
Paolo: When I was 16 I began listening to a lot of metal bands. That is my outlet and expression of my anger. I listened to Sepultura, Cannibal Corpse and Deicide at that time.

KJ9: What do you say to people who ask why you play western-style music?
King: We never really encountered that question before but I think it's not really labelled as Western Music anymore since many people around the world already made their different styles of music in their own ways and made their own style of metal based on which country they're from.
Arron: I don’t care about them. Change the topic or the conversation will end fast. Hahaha!
Paolo: Music is a general language for me. It doesn’t belong to any race. It’s a form of human expression with arrangement of notes.

KJ10: Do the wives and girlfriends of the personnel support what you are doing?
King: No because I don't have any as of now haha!
Arron: I don’t have a girlfriend. We’re all single but our friends support our music.
Paolo: I do not have any.

KJ11: What are the best and worst things about the community in your city?
King: The best thing? I think the food. From where we’re from the food is so good. The worst is that everyone is only paying attention to what they look like and what kind of material stuff they possess. That annoys me. The government is shitty, that's given but the people have no respect to one another that's why they couldn't find peace on anything. They always argue on small things and make those things a big deal.
Arron: The worst is crab mentality. The good is I don’t know.
Paolo: You mean metal community here in Philippines? Well the scene is still at a growing stage. I hope that metal will have a place here in terms of the industry.

KJ12: What are your most memorable shows or experiences onstage?
King: I think that was a show in our home-town where I think we are second to the last band to play and people really waited for us to play and they got so crazy when we got on stage and did our thing. The crowd was headbanging all throughout the set. We were new back then and we didn't expect that kind of support that time. It was flattering and awesome.
Arron: For me the Zambales (place in the Phiippines). We were the main band even if we aren’t that famous, the crowd treated us well. The love our music!
Paolo: Memorable? All of our gigs here are memorable. Good ones and bad ones.

KJ13: Have you got any message for the fans?
King: "Thank you" won't even touch the fact of how much they support us. We promise to keep getting better and make more songs. Thank you so much!
Paolo: For our fans out there keep supporting metal! Without you there is no audience to listen to us. You are the biggest part of metal empire!
Arron: Thank you so much..and keep supporting the underground metal scene.

KJ14: OK, thank you very much.
King: Thank you!
Arron: Thank you sir and more power.

NEW SAFFAR INTERVIEW: "Religious lyrics will now be mixed with social and historical", 18/7/2016 (Bandung)

SAFFAR band, April 2012. Left to Right: Parjo (vocals), Iyenk (drums), Acil (guitar), and Ramon (drums).
My second interview with SAFFAR (Bandung Brutal Death Metal)
Interpretation by: Popo Demons Damn (vocalist, DEMONS DAMN band) and Butche (vocalist, THE CRUEL band)
Date: 18 July 2016 @ D-Throne Records, Cicaheum, Bandung
SAFFAR is: Gilang Acil Saffar (guitar / vocals), Ramon (bass), Iyenk (drums), and Gabriel (additional vocalist for Bandung gigs only). The band looks for additional bassist until Ramon recovers from sickness.

Kieran James (Busuk Chronicles: What is the situation with the band members now?

Gilang Acil Saffar (guitarist): For now we plan to continue with two persons. We are still waiting for Ramon to recover from sickness.

KJ: Can the band still play on the stage or do you need additional members?

Acil: We are trying to get an additional bass player.

KJ: When is the next show due for Saffar?

Acil: 24 July 2016 in Indramayu.

KJ: Are you playing at Groupies Death Fest on 30 July 2016?

Acil: No.

KJ: So who is doing the vocals?

Acil: Me.

KJ: Is there a plan to get a new vocalist?

Popo Demons Damn: If they have gigs in Bandung they usually ask a friend Gabriel from Zainabur (black / death band) to do the vocals. If they have a gig in other cities they play with only two people as Gabriel has work commitments.

KJ: Do you plan to get a new vocalist for a new album?

Acil: We had a plan but we now focus first on getting the bass player situation resolved. We are collecting the songs for the new album. The material is ready except for the vocals.

BUSUK CHRONICLES' first band interview, April 2012
KJ: How many songs are completed?

Acil: Five songs. We have confusion over whether to make an EP or an album.

KJ: Will Saffar always have religious lyrics?

Acil: I think religious themes will be mixed with social and historical.

KJ: Who will write the lyrics for the new album?

Acil: Only Iyenk and I will write the songs and the lyrics. For the second album Ramon may be involved in the writing process. It will be better if we can finish the [instrumental] song materials first. And maybe Popo can help me to write lyrics too!

Popo: After Demons Damn lyrics are finished, yes? Because I am collecting lyrics for my album right now.

Acil: Yes.

Popo: I think it is a good idea for you to find a new vocalist who can make the lyrics for the next album.

KJ: Why did the original vocalist Parjo leave?

Acil: Parjo left the band because he wanted to work in his family’s doctors’ clinic. He will continue what his parents built. Parjo is still continuing his study in college. He also got married and is more focused on work and family. He had a problem because he lives far from Bandung so it was difficult for him to meet with the other band members.

KJ: Perhaps you could ask Parjo to write the lyrics because his lyrics help to make Saffar unique.

Acil: For the next album I cannot ask Parjo to make lyrics for Saffar because it would be hard for me to explain the meaning of the lyrics to the fans. Only Parjo knows the meaning of his deep lyrics.

Popo: Now the lyrics will undergo a major change to incorporate social and historical themes to add to the religious themes.

KJ: Are you part of One Finger Movement and if not do you support One Finger Movement?

Acil: Personally I try to be natural. I play Death Metal first and foremost and am not oriented towards One Finger Movement.

KJ: What is the meaning of the first album title Mandatory El Arshy?

Acil: “El Arshy” is Arabian, the meaning is “sky”. The meaning is “coming from the sky”.

KJ: Please explain more.

Acil: Coming from the God, you know? The people say: God lives in the sky, God is everywhere. That is why the people say: God is coming from the sky. The sky is the highest place on this planet. We just say “in the sky” meaning God because the sky is the highest place in this planet. [This answer was interpreted into English by Butche.]

KJ: Butche, any questions or comments?

Butche (vocalist, The Cruel): Saffar is good Death Metal music because it is different from all the others in terms of the sound.

KJ: Have you got any comment about Sickles band from Madura?

Acil: Yes, I know Arie [Hardiyanto] from Sickles. Sickles is a kind of Death Metal band which mixes the local culture with the metal music. It is good collaboration music.

KJ: Do you think that Saffar will always continue?

Acil: Yes, I hope that Saffar will continue to exist. I still hope Saffar can be different from the other bands.

Popo: This is why I do not agree with what they say in other cities that all bands in Bandung follow the style of Jasad. Identity is made through both lyrics and music and Saffar has a unique identity.

KJ: What is the message for the fans of Saffar?

Acil: We still exist and our new songs will be different to other bands. Our style is always different from other bands.

KJ: When will you be able to release the new album?

Acil: Next year 2017.

KJ: Do you know the record label?

Acil: Two or three record labels are trying to make a deal with us but we are still waiting to record the EP material.

KJ: Will you record without a vocalist?

Acil: Yes, just the instrumental. But when we get an additional vocalist and the bassist returns we will record the vocals and the final version.

KJ: Will you get a new bassist or wait for Ramon?

Acil: At the moment we are getting additional bassist only but we do not want to make a permanent change of bassist. We will wait for Ramon to return.
