NEW INTERVIEW: Our first interview with VALAFAR (Bradford, England Death Metal), 7/5/2017

Kieran James: Hi, can you tell me the early history from the formation of the band up to now?

VALAFAR band: We formed early 2013 in Bradford, West Yorkshire. Most of the band knew each other from previous groups around the Bradford circuit and joined to create Valafar. Our first Demo EP 'Ritual of the Diabolical' was released in February 2013. Following this, 'Helheim', the first full length album was independently released in August 2015. Since then we have been performing regularly nationwide at clubs, bars and festivals.

KJ2: How is the response of people to your debut full-length album Helheim

We’ve had a great response so far from our fans. The first pressings of the CD sold out completely and the reviews have been extremely positive. We’re still frequently selling copies online and at gigs over a year after the initial release.

KJ3: What are the most influential bands for you guys in playing music?

As a band we take our influences from Scandinavian bands such as Amon Amarth, Entombed and Bloodbath as well the old school American bands such as Obituary and Cannibal Corpse. As individuals though our influences our quite diverse, we try and incorporate this into Valafar as much as possible.

KJ4: Are you writing songs and planning for a second album?

Writing is progressing well at the moment. We’re hopefully planning to release our next album around the Autumn 2017. We have a number of new songs written that we integrate into our live set.

KJ5: What are the lyrical themes?

In Valafar we tend to stray away from specific themes and choose to cover a wide array of subject matters such as War, Norse Mythology and Serial Killings. Although recently we’ve been leaning more towards Viking topics in our music as a lot of our fans identify us with that theme.

KJ7: Why do you all like to play death-metal instead of deathcore or other modern styles?

Nothing against Deathcore but we choose to play Death Metal as it is far more riff driven genre. Death metal tends to have a much more organic sound by comparison. Modern metal seems to rely far too much on production and less on the band overall. We’re quite traditional in regard to our live setup.

KJ8: What is the meaning of the band name and why was it chosen?

Valafar is an altered spelling of a Demon Valefar. Valefar is a duke of hell in demonology. It seemed like the perfect name for a Death Metal band.

KJ9: What is the metal scene like in Bradford and what are some of the best venues, recording studios and record labels?

I’d say the metal scene in West Yorkshire is very strong indeed. A venue we frequently play at is the Exchange in Keighley. Keighley is quite a small town comparably to Bradford or Leeds but the turnout there is normally very good. Other venues include The Fenton, Bad Apples and the Trap Door nights at Bradford Uni. For our last few records we worked with Robert Hobson at Silent City Studios in Leeds. He’s a really talented producer and it’s a great place to record if you’re in any sort of extreme metal band. We don’t have much experience working with record labels around Bradford but I’d say Yorkshire in general is quite well known for Doom Metal. Peaceville Records is based nearby and they’ve released music from artists such as My Dying Bride, Anathema, Bloodbath etc.

KJ10: What towns and cities have you played shows and where do you get the best reactions and biggest crowds?

We’ve played all over the UK. London and Manchester are great places to play but we always love coming back to Bradford and Keighley to play for our local fans. We’re trying to reach further afield with our shows at the moment. 2017/18 is filling up nicely with shows planned both UK and Europe wide.

KJ11: What are the best and worst things about the metal community in your town?

The fans are really supportive of underground music, people always buy CD’s and shirts at shows and come out and cheer for bands. Bands are also really supportive of each other, playing live events is often a great way to meet likeminded musicians. The only negative aspect of the metal scene would be venue closures. It seems to have become increasingly difficult for live music venues to stay open these days.

KJ12: How many copies of the debut album did you sell and do you plan physical copy releases for future albums?

We sold out of our first demo EP ‘Ritual of the Diabolical’; digital copies are still available online through. Helheim we’ve sold around 150 physical copies with a majority being bought digitally through our website. We’re planning on releasing the next album physically also but with the possibility of getting vinyls produced as well.

KJ13: Pick your favorite and give a reason – Obituary versus Cannibal Corpse?

Opinions in the band are divided on this one, it’s hard to pick one over the other.

KJ14: Iron Maiden versus Judas Priest?

Iron Maiden.

KJ15: Tomb of the Mutilated versus Kill?

Tomb of the Mutilated. It has that old school sound we’re all fans of. Although the band musically is much stronger on the Kill record.

KJ16: Chris Barnes versus Corpsegrinder?

Early Chris Barnes. His vocals aren’t what they used to be these days.

KJ17: Bradford City versus Bradford Park Avenue?

Bradford City. Currently watching the Semi-Final against Fleetwood whilst filling out this interview.

KJ18: Name the three best curry restaurants in Bradford (!)

International Shezaans Akash.

KJ19: I’m living in Glasgow but we are an Indonesian metal zine. Have you listened to Indonesian death-metal bands Death Vomit, Bleeding Corpse or Saffar? Please give your opinions.

I haven’t listened to any of these bands unfortunately but ill definitely be looking into them after this interview.

KJ20: Have you got any message for the fans?

Thanks for all your support. If you want us to play a show in your town or country then please get in touch at valafarofficial@outlook.com. \m/

KJ21: OK, thank you very much. Thanks a lot!

CRITICAL DISASTER (Kediri, ID.) - Brahmavidya Shuddha Dhahanapura, by Andrew Sick, 12/4/2017

Critical Disaster (Kediri Kingdom Death Metal, East Java, ID.) - Brahmavidya Shuddha Dhahanapura (Pathologically Explicit Recordings)

A cacophonic brutal f***ing apocalypse baptized Critical Disaster was born in Kediri, East Java for the second time to spread a destructive f***ing hymn of pure f***ing violence entitled "Brahmavidya Shuddha Dhahanapura" and this time sparing no f***ing soul with this infernal musickal machine of true f***ing devastation! This savage f***ing storm of relentless f***ing brutality is divided in 10 parts of murdering Brutal Death Fucking Metal including excellent guitar intro and outro from Innu Killharmonic and this f***ing demonstration of insanity is for the most totally f***ing successful by having a lot of crazy f***ing riffing, but we can also find much repetitive riffs in all songs and also much parts sounding very similar that can be also a positive aspect by making a stylized release with the same musickal feelings for the 34 killler f***ing minutes! "Brahmavidya Shuddha Dhahanapura" contains an oppressive and explosive f***ing atmosphere increasing the enjoyment of this second act of pure f***ing savagery coming to burn our f***ing spirit with its insane f***ing blasphemy! Critical Disaster is Arga (Vocals), Ilham (Guitars), Tanjung (Bass), Harispa (Drums) and the quartet commanding this uncontrollable f***ing beast is sharing a killer f***ing composition, perhaps repetitive as mentioned above, but in my opinion not taking off any pleasure from this shit by giving them a f***ing style and some shitty identity! The vocals of Arga is f***ing brutal but very redundant after a while by being very repetitive but still keeping an insane f***ing side; Ilham on guitars is performing mainly great f***ing riffs and sharing very rarely bad ones and knows how to create a catchy f***ing songwriting despite its chaotic hearing; also a great f***ing job from Tanjung on bass; and Harispa on drums is completely f***ing insane by sharing some extreme fast and non stop drumming increasing the brutal f***ing quality of this f***ing release! "Brahmavidya Shuddha Dhahanapura" is not a perfect album but having everything to break your f***ing bones by its relentless insanity having its own f***ing style but also including its part of catchy f***ing moments! The production is good but could have been way heavier with a better drums sound, mixing is also f***ing good but not perfect and it sounds a little bit chaotic but for this part increasing the ambiance and brutality shared by this f***ing shit! Despite a couple of obvious flaws, Critical Disaster is still offering a gigantic brutal blasting f***ing release recommended to each sick heads wishing to explore some f***ing blastality! Insane Fucking Piece of Relentless Brutality! 9/10. [This review was first published by Andrew Sick of Sick Reviews and is used here with his kind permission.]

CD REVIEW: DIGESTING (Jember, East Java, ID.) - Digesting (2016), by Mr Andrew Sick, 12/4/2017

Digesting (Jember, East Java, ID.)- Digesting (Dismembered Records)

From Jember, East Java, a new abomination was born to unleash its f***ing anger baptized under the damned f***ing name Digesting and spreading chaos by launching a first self titled f***ing assault lasting around 6 f***ing minutes of total f***ing brutality! This insane bloodthirsty f***ing monster is performing a Brutal Death Fucking Metal having a big influence to the old skull brutality and we can also hear some old skull death metal vibes coming to give to this putrid f***ing shit some identity! The production of this demo is f***ing great and heavy as f*** but of course not perfect, a mixing well done and despite to have some flaws, the disk sounds like a massive f***ing ton of shit invading your f***ing ears during this sick f***ing experience and increasing the enjoyment of this f***ing shit! Digesting is offering a 2-song demo being excellent to all f***ing levels but of course including some f***ing parts a little bland and not reinventing the shitty genre by sharing a songwriting that perhaps lack a little of catchy f***ing parts making a release f***ing addictive and memorable! Bagus Rohmad (Vocals), Guruh Maulana (Guitars), Faizin Dian (Drums) are the trio consisting of this violent f***ing beast and surely not delivering a perfect composition but creating some great f***ing brutality with some excellent and crazy f***ing moments! Bagus is giving a great f***ing vocals and perhaps a little bit redundant after a while but not taking off the enjoyment of this f***ing shit, Guruh is performing only good f***ing riffing and missing maybe some catchy and outstanding parts but still knowing how to write some good f***ing brutal death metal and finally, Faizin on drums is f***ing great being varied and f***ing fast as f***! Digesting is giving a work missing some highlighting f***ing parts and originality but on the other side, they are still performing some great f***ing brutality with a chaotic f***ing atmosphere increasing the shitty quality of this f***ing shit and worth to be placed among the best of the shitty genre! A demo containing nothing new but recommended to all sick f***ing heads and impatiently waiting what Digested are preparing as second assault! Great Brutal Fucking Piece of Chaotic Fucking Brutality! 8/10. [This review was first published by Andrew Sick of Sick Reviews and is used here with his kind permission.]

CD REVIEW: SADISTIC TORTURE (Padang, West Sumatra, ID.) - Promo 2016, by Andrew Sick, 28/3/2017

Sadistic Torture (Padang, West Sumatra) - Promo 2016 (Endless Torture Records)

Total Twisted F***ing Piece of Insanity! This is what offering Sadistic Torture emerged from Padang in Indonesia to show people again that this country excels in the most extreme f***ing side of the shitty genre and this new bomb of pure f***ing shit is just called "Promo 2016"! This 2-songs promo is f***ing crazy and could be described as insane Brutal Death Fucking Metal that could be compared with other bands from this place but being very original by creating some disgusting and twisted f***ing musick forging their identity and giving to this f***ing shit all necessary elements to mark their genre! Lintang (Vocals), Ulil Amri (Guitars), Ronald (Bass), Ragil (Drums) are the sickos giving life to this unmerciful bloodthirsty f***ing beast by giving a perfect composition having a lot catchy f***ing parts and as mentioned above, having a few twisted riffing that only increase the level of enjoyment and addiction of this brilliant f***ing promo! They really make us feel we are witnessing some butcher f***ing scenes with a bloody atmosphere that penetrates our f***ing bones to the marrow by its coldness and extreme f***ing brutality! Vocals of this shit is f***ing sick, the riffing is only f***ing insane knowing how to make us addicted and the drums is crazy as f*** by being totally f***ing brutal and great! I think Sadistic Torture managed to create some perfect f***ing piece of brutality and maybe having as only flaw the production that is not 100% perfect especially some twisted guitar riffs a little buried in the mix but this is still successful and sounding f***ing heavy! "Promo 2016" is 6 f***ing minutes of total f***ing sickness without any weak f***ing second and spreading only an insane and pure brutal death having everything to mark its era and Sadistic Torture really managed their start into the world of blastality by giving musically a perfect CD that make it a mandatory piece of brutality to the most extreme sickheads on the planet! 9.5/10. CD REVIEW: ASPHYXIATE (Bekasi Death Metal Horde, West Java, ID.) - Promo 2017, by Andrew Sick, 27/3/2017

ASPHYXIATE (Bekasi Death Metal Horde, West Java, ID.) - Promo 2017 (Groupies Merch)

Another ruthless f***ing bomb was born in the most brutal city of the shitty world, Bekasi, from the capital of Extreme f***ing Metal Indonesia and this time it's the legendary Asphyxiate that are back to offer a new Promotion CD to make us wait until their fourth album and making us totally impatient for this long awaited f***ing release! It was very hard to imagine that Asphyxiate could come back even stronger than their previous work but "Promo 2017" managed to surpass all what the band has done so far by delivering a sick Brutal Death F***ing Metal totally pure and f***ing addictive like the old classicks of the shitty genre! This shit contains 2 songs of the most f***ing successful including only crushing f***ing parts and still being original and faithful to true f***ing brutality after almost 20 years existence by delivering without any f***ing doubt one of the best promo ever released including a cold and brutal f***ing atmosphere coming to break your f***ing bones and inflicting a drug of the most f***ing addictive! Asphyxiate consists of Josh (Guitars/Vocals), Adi (Bass), Reno (Drums) and the trio are doing an exceptional f***ing job on all f***ing levels, writing some brilliant f***ing composition and having this pure brutal f***ing soul coming to increase our feeling of chaos in this complete f***ing butchery!

I think Josh is unbelievable by ameliorating his vocals from the last album and giving something a little more guttural and making this shit more insane and enjoyable! His work on guitars is also just f***ing insane by performing only excellent f***ing riffings and including a lot catchy ones composed in a sick f***ing way! Adi on bass is doing an excellent job and Reno is totally f***ing brutal with a diverse and insane f***ing drumming increasing the level of enjoyment of this perfect blastastic f***ing bomb! The production in my ears is f***ing perfect with a flawless mixing making sounds this f***ing shit like a real ton of f***ing bricks by being heavy as f*** but also of very high quality, especially for a promo! Asphyxiate is delivering 7 f***ing minutes of true f***ing insanity coming to destroy all weak fucking minds with their brutal execution and "Promo 2017" is a pure brilliant f***ing piece of perfection that every true sickos is forced to get! Flawless F***ing Piece of Total F***ing Sickness! 10/10. [Ths review was frst published by Andrew Sick of Sick Reviews and is used here with his kind permission.]
