NEWS: Congratulations Douglas Li (Fear Index guitarist) & Yan (Happy Wedding Day), Hong Kong

Left to Right: Kin (Douglas' former housemate), Yan, and Douglas, Hong Kong
NEWS: Congratulations and best wishes to Douglas Li (Fear Index guitarist) & Yan (Happy Wedding Day), Hong Kong, Sunday 22/5/2016. FEAR INDEX plays a mix of traditional ANTHRAX / METALLICA style thrash and modern post-thrash / groove (PANTERA / LAMB OF GOD). FEAR INDEX also features guitar shred solos from Douglas Li which makes the band extra special. FEAR INDEX released its debut EP Age of Wrath through Greedy Sea Records (Beijing) in 2015. FEAR INDEX is: Chester Lo (rhythm guitar / vocals), Mathew Tang (bass), Douglas Li (lead guitar), and Lai Wing Hang ("Hang") on drums. The previous drummer was Cyrus Wong.  The band has covered "Enter Sandman" (by METALLICA) and "Breaking the Law" (by JUDAS PRIEST).

At Douglas' wedding party the band was: Vocalist: Douglas, Guitarist: Joe Sat, Bassist: Fat Boy, and Drummer: Simon Tsang. The other three FEAR INDEX band members were the grooms-men. Presently Douglas and Yan are honeymooning in Melbourne, Australia. When I asked Douglas last week whether Yan supports his band activities he said: "Ya, sure"! [All wedding pictures are posted here with the kind permission of Douglas Li.]

NEW FEAR INDEX (HONG KONG) INTERVIEW: "You see more metal shirts in Kwun Tong district", 12/1/2016

FEAR INDEX band (Hong Kong Thrash Metal). Left to Right: Chester Lo (rhythm guitar / vocals), Mathew Tang (bass), Kieran James (Busuk Chronicles), and Douglas Li (lead guitar) @ Hong Kong, 12/1/2016. Drummer Lai Wing Hang could not make it that night.
My second interview with FEAR INDEX (Hong Kong Thrash Metal)
Date: 12 January 2016 @ Mong Kok, Hong Kong
By Kieran James aka Jack Frost
FEAR INDEX is: Chester Lo (vocals / rhythm guitar), Mathew Tang (bass), Douglas Li (lead guitar), and Lai Wing Hang (drums). Lai Wing Hang replaces the previous drummer Cyrus Wong.

Kieran James aka Jack Frost: Please tell us more about the recording process for your new EP Age of Wrath to be released on Greedy Sea Records?

Chester (vocalist / rhythm guitarist): We started…

Douglas (lead guitarist): Around 2014.

Chester: It was started on 14 March 2014 and first we recorded the guitar and bass at home. We recorded the vocals at Douglas’ house. For the drum part we were lucky to get sponsored by someone else to record at Live House in Hong Kong. We pretty much got all of the recording done in May.

Mathew (bassist): Yes, May 2014.

Chester: Then we started mixing and mastering all the stuff ourselves. We had some accidents in between. We were going through this in early 2015. We got stuck at the cover artwork. The illustrator is Douglas’ friend.

[All smile.]

Chester: We were lucky we got a recording deal. The record label Greedy Sea Records approached us in early 2015.

KJ: Is it a UK record label?

Mathew: No, it is a brand new China label from Beijing.

KJ: You must be very happy that they approached you?

Mathew: Yes, for sure.

Chester: Lucky draw.

KJ: Did the record label ask you to do some Chinese songs?

Mathew: No, they just said to do what we want.

Douglas: They said they support our style.

KJ: Did they want any change to the music?

Mathew: No, they wanted it as close as possible to the original sound. They just wanted to let us get it to the world.

Chester: The founder of the label has played some extreme stuff. We were quite surprised that an extreme-metal guy will get us a record deal. He says he listens to all sorts of things.

KJ: How many copies did they make?

Chester: I guess 1,000 copies and 50 cassettes. They were done at the same time.

KJ: When was the release date?

Douglas: September 2015.

Mathew: In Hong Kong.

Chester: It was a little earlier in China, the shipping takes time.

KJ: What is the response for the album?

Douglas: Some of the audience liked the cover art and the music, including people from England and Japan.

Mathew: The record label has the network to distribute in Australia, UK, and Japan.

KJ: Did metal fans from any other countries contact you?

Chester: In the past half-year we have had fans on the Facebook from different parts of the world.

KJ: Did you get any response from our first interview last year?

Chester: Yes, a boy or man from Russia is very keen on our music.

KJ: Did anyone contact you from Indonesia?

Chester: We saw a few likes from there.

KJ: What are the best and biggest shows you played last year?

Chester: A-Fest in Malaysia; this is a metal fest.

Mathew: They had local metal bands and also Singaporean and Indonesian.

KJ: What was the crowd size?

Chester: We didn’t count as it was quite dark [smiles].

Mathew: The hall was pretty big. It was in a very famous indoor sports stadium. The crowd was possibly around 500+.

KJ: Are you happy with the way the CD sounds?

Chester: Yes. We were experiencing a tight budget. We were testing how tight we could make the budget.

KJ: And you said it cost HK$10,000 [17,709,000IDR / US$1,284] in total?

Chester: That is for the gear but some of the gear we own already so we didn’t need to pay for that.

KJ: Can you hear any problems with the album?

Chester: It is not the best, we tried to do it with the minimum budget; we used the digital recording methods; we had to sacrifice some warm [analogue] sounds from the album.

KJ: It’s OK; I think it is a very good sound.

Chester: We listen to MP3 format now; technology has helped us a lot.

KJ: Have you got any songs left that were not recorded?

Chester: No.

Douglas Li (lead guitar), Chester Lo (g / v), Mathew Tang (b)
KJ: Have you been writing any new songs?

Chester: Yes. Over the last half-year I have drafted some ideas. Yesterday I got some more time to draft some songs.

KJ: Which parts come first in the writing process?

Chester: Guitar parts come first, then I work it around, add some vocals, lead guitar…

KJ: How about the guitar solos performed by Douglas?

Chester: I write a complete song and then I pass it to Douglas for the guitar solo.

KJ: Who writes the lyrics?

Mathew: Me and Chester.

Chester: Some are totally by me, some by him, and some we work together.

KJ: Do you call Age of Wrath an album or an EP?

Douglas: EP.

KJ: Are there any plans for the full album?

Chester: That would be a long battle, writing a full album, we are working on it.

KJ: Your lyrics are about interpersonal issues and struggle, did you consider to experiment?

Mathew: There may be something that happens on TV or in your life and you want to write it down. If everyone approves we can try it out.

KJ: Is it a conscious choice to write in English?

Chester: Yes, we want to reach as wide an audience as possible.

Mathew: The wider audience.

Chester: English is the international language.

KJ: Is there a guitar solo in every song?

Chester: Except for song #4 titled “Haters”.

Mathew: That song is a very fast song.

Chester: It’s not the fastest.

Mathew: It has a kind of SLAYER feel to it.

Chester: We have changed our drummer. He [Hang] has to work today so he can’t join us.

KJ: Why did you change the drummer?

Chester: After some time the members have different tastes…

Douglas: And opinions.

Chester: We all want to go in different musical directions so he [Cyrus Wong] left.

KJ: What about Douglas, he is into power-metal shredding and you are a thrash band?

Chester: He can shred whatever he likes as long as he can help up the speed [laughs].

KJ: How did you find the new drummer?

Chester: We met him at the rehearsal space. When we needed to find a new drummer literally we asked his help to find another drummer then he wanted to have a try himself.

Mathew: It just clicked [laughs]. He gets the feel of the songs and he knows what we want him to play on the drums.

Douglas: He is not really a metal drummer but he has a lot of performance experience; that’s really important.

Mathew: It’s been fun for the new drummer because he just signed up and he gets to play these big shows. Everyone is happy and he is happy of course. He played at the show in Malaysia.

KJ: That was your first show outside Greater China region of HK, China, plus Taiwan?

Mathew: Yes, in Malaysia.

KJ: What was the show you played in Taiwan?

Chester: It was called Freedom Festival.

KJ: Do you think your live show is improving?

Chester: We are happy with the new drummer. He learned the songs fast so we can play tighter and more solid than before.

Douglas: And he has really good music sense. He really fits our music.

Chester: He knows other instruments.

Douglas: He can play guitar.

Chester: This makes it a lot easier for us to communicate.

KJ: What bands are you listening to recently?

Chester: SLAYER comes up first in line, the latest album.

Mathew: You need to check it out, it’s really great.

Mathew: There is a new ANTHRAX single out, it’s a really good song; you can check it out on YouTube.

Mathew: “Illusion” is the latest song we wrote [track #2 on the CD].

KJ: Do you think this is the best song on the EP?

Mathew: It has speed and song structure; you can tell it is more matured. When we first heard it from Chester we were pleasantly surprised. It is very challenging for us to remember. When the chorus comes Douglas has a melodic lead guitar thing going on under the chorus. Everything is really gelled together.

KJ: Do you think that is the best guitar solo on the EP?

Douglas: I say “yes” as it is really hard and challenging.

KJ: Will you all still play this music when you are older than me, say 50-60-years-old?

Douglas: I hope we can.

KJ: Is it hard to explain this western metal music to family and friends?

Mathew: Family? I guess so. Friends? It takes some time, let it be.

Chester: I try to mention it to them but I say more if they are interested. If not then let it be.

[Douglas starts to sing the song “Let it be”!]

KJ: In 16 days in Hong Kong I have only seen two people wearing metal shirts, both in Mong Kok.

Chester: Most of the bands rent a place for rehearsal in the industrial area of Kwun Tong; you might see more metal shirts there.

Mathew: The CD will be on the shelves in the stores soon.

KJ: Which stores?

Chester: Tom Lee musical instrument store, Tsim Sha Tsui.

Mathew: And we are setting up the online store now.

KJ: Will there be an album launching?

Chester: I guess not; the scene is not so big here. However, some bands had an album launching.

FEAR INDEX (HONG KONG) INTERVIEW: "Girls want K-pop guitar lessons, I hate it", 1/12/2014

FEAR INDEX band from Hong Kong. Left to Right: Mathew (bass), Chester (vocals and rhythm guitar), Douglas (lead guitar), and Zyrus (drummer) @ McDonald's, Tok Wa Wan, Hong Kong, 1/12/2014.

My interview with FEAR INDEX (Hong Kong Thrash Metal)
By: Kieran James
Expert Comments by: Sam (bassist) and Crab (vocals) of BlackWine
Date: 1 December 2014 @ McDonald’s, Tok Wa Wan, Hong Kong
FEAR INDEX is: Chester (vocals and rhythm guitar), Douglas (lead guitar), Mathew (bass), and Zyrus (drums)

FEAR INDEX live
Kieran James (Busuk Webzine): Please first tell us the band history.

Chester (vocals and rhythm guitar, FEAR INDEX): We started off in 2012 and we are making our first EP right now. We have been playing in the underground scene, until this year, April, we played one festival in Taiwan called Spring Screen.

Mathew (bassist, FEAR INDEX): The demo was 2013.

C: Our style is based on thrash-metal mixed up with some modern groove-metal. We sing in English. We play something like a thrash-metal verse and then turned into groove.

Mathew: This music is more modernish like Lamb of God.

KJ: What are your influences?

Mathew: Pantera, Big-4, Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer. The basic influences are there. We listen to all sorts of metal from hair-metal to death-metal.

KJ: So, individually, what are your influences for each band member?

Mathew: Metallica, Slayer, Death (the band)...

Chester: Slayer, Metallica, Machine Head, Arch Enemy...

Zyrus (drummer, FEAR INDEX): Dream Theater.

KJ: Maybe he’s in the wrong band [all laugh].

Zyrus: Shadows Fall, Cradle of Filth, Arch Enemy, Slipknot, Emperor, Winds of Plague.

KJ: How about drumming influences?

Zyrus: Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater, and Jason Bittner of Shadows Fall.

KJ: Your influences, Douglas?

Douglas (lead guitar): Metallica, Slayer, and Dragonforce. I like the guitar solos for Dragonforce. I like the guitar solos but they are too technical and hard to remember. You can’t 100% play like that in a performance. They have a very good guitar solo idea, I learnt a lot from them.

Chester and Zyrus
KJ: Your main influences as a guitar player?

Douglas: Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Corey (Trivium guitarist).

KJ: Are these influences for a solo project or do you play this progressive style in Fear Index?

Douglas: In the future I hope I can [laughs] but I’m still learning.

Chester: In our songs we did feature solo passages. In that section Douglas can use the techniques of harmonic progression, as in that genre. There is room for him to show off his talents.

Mathew: Think of us like Metallica. Chester is the singer and the rhythm guitarist.

KJ: Think of a better example!

Mathew: Slayer.

KJ: No, their singer is the bass player.

Mathew: Megadeth?

KJ: Yes, OK!

[All laugh]

KJ: How is the progress for the EP?

Chester: It is at the mixing stage right now. It should be done by the first half of 2015.

KJ: How many songs will there be?

Chester: There are five.

KJ: Are the songs from the demo included on the EP?

Chester: Yes, it will be two new songs plus the three songs from the demo.

KJ: Does the demo sound different from the EP?

Chester: The demo is made up of songs with instruments from the computer. Now we use real instruments.

Mathew: Real amps, not software amp.

KJ: Is the line-up the same as for the demo?

Mathew: Yes, it is the same line-up since the start.

Mathew, Chester, and Zyrus
KJ: How did you all get into western metal as we know this is not a trendy fashion in Hong Kong?

Mathew: For me I was brought up in Dubai. My friends were listening to grunge and then punk style such as Offspring. Then people listened to nu-metal such as Mudhoney, Slipknot and Coal Chamber around 2000. When I started going to uni, people listened to many types of music. In 2003 MP3 was taking off and you could discover many types of music including metal genres. You can find the metal genre you like best and start practising it.

Chester: Actually it is the same as Mathew’s situation – the internet boom and MP3. When you grow up as a teenager the mainstream music scene gives you boring pop songs with no energy...

[Douglas laughs]

Chester: There is no emotional feeling.

Mathew: It’s a fantasy world, it’s not real. Everything is like happy ever after, life is not like that.

Douglas: Same as Chester. He said that Hong Kong music is like pop music. No-one is talking about metal stars. I started to learn guitar and practice and then I got into the music and then find another good metal band to practice.

Zyrus: [interpretation into English by Mathew]: One of my friends gave me a Dream Theater CD and I was impressed. I started searching different metal bands to listen to. I go to local CD stores such as HMV and browse.

KJ: Are there any shops selling metal CDs here?

Mathew: Two years ago yes, now no. The last shop closed down. No-one buys CDs so you can’t sustain the shop.

KJ: How is the metal scene in Hong Kong?

Mathew: HK has seen through the whole thing from HC to post-HC to Jap Rock...

Chester: I started going to local band scenes ten years ago when I was a kid. There were only two heavy bands in HK: BlackWine and King Lychee.

Mathew: They were a hardcore band. They still exist.

Chester: Before 2007 so far from internet we saw that there were three other heavy bands, but they all disbanded before the 2000s. After 2010, there started to be more heavy bands. That scene is still small compared to the old band scenes in HK.

Mathew: You could say that the HK scene is kind of weak. The venues are not very convenient for people to go to. In HK space is a problem. The venues are in warehouse areas. The parents may not allow their kids to go out late to the shows.

Chester: Ten years ago kids had more passion for the band scenes. Before they would go to the venue before the show started and continue right until the end. Ten years ago you would find that.

Mathew: Maybe one show every two months...

Chester: Now you would see more than ten shows a month, with different genres including rock and pop and Japanese rock to HC and post-HC and maybe death-metal.

KJ: Are there metal-only shows?

Chester: There were some. Just last year there were some gigs with just metal but not this half-year.

KJ: What are the future plans for the band?

Chester: Finish our first EP, start organising our first tour around Asia.

Mathew: Try to get our new EP out and spreading it worldwide and trying to get gigs to perform around the world if possible.

Douglas: Finish the EP and then tour around Asia. That’s the plan yeah.

KJ: Any dreams for the future?

Mathew: Hopefully being able to sustain the band and be able to perform worldwide if possible.

KJ: What are the band members’ jobs outside of the band?

Mathew: Computer programmer.

Chester: Freelance musician, teacher, composer.

Zyrus: Drum tutor.

Douglas: Guitar tutor, freelance audio engineer.

KJ: What can be done to improve the metal scene in HK?

Mathew: If there was more media exposure.

Grey skies Tok Wa Wan, Hong Kong
KJ: Does the metal scene have a bad image in HK?

Mathew: It does actually. I won’t say HK is a special society. It is not strict but the image of a person is very important. If you have tattoos people think you are a bad person. People here are not open to looking at different types of things. This type of music is wild and fast. People will think: “what is this? It doesn’t make sense” [laughs].

Chester: Local people are not used to explore new things. They will stick to what they have in their hand and what people around them are doing.

Mathew: It’s media-driven and they follow along with trends.

Chester: They are quite scared to be different. If their friend says it is good they will convince themselves to accept it. If someone says “metal is loud and noisy” other people will freak out.

Mathew: Before Taiwanese pop dominated the market but now it is Korean pop. Especially for HK the music here is nothing. Forget the [Canto-pop] scene. There are no recent outbreaks of artists. In Canto-pop it is still Anita Mui’s generation. The lyrics and song structures are just recycled.

Chester: It’s not as hopeless as Mathew says. I grew up in HK. The metal scenes are growing. Even in international scene the genre trends are changing. Maybe a few years’ later metal trends will come back to HK. Ten years ago I was going to BlackWine gigs in a small venue. I think it is going to improve. It needs time to establish.

Mathew: Yes, it needs time.

Douglas: I hate K-pop coming to HK! The girl students come to learn guitar. They want to learn Korean songs on guitar. I don’t know how to teach them [laughs]. It’s not a language problem. It’s the music style.

Chester: It’s electronic music.

Mathew: Repeating the sample over and over; the loops keep refreshing.

KJ: I see there are many Indonesian people living here in HK. Did you think of playing a show for the Indonesian community because metal is so big in Indonesia now?

Mathew: That can happen...but we need a venue first. Maybe when we get our EP released.

Crab (vocals) and Sam (bass), BLACKWINE
KJ: What is your message to the fans?

Chester: We love you all [laughs]. Without you we are nothing.

Mathew: We hope you enjoy the upcoming EP. Finally it is coming out.

Chester: Metal needs you.

Douglas: Hope to see you soon.

Zyrus: I’m speechless. They have said what I wanted to say!

KJ: What is your comment about Fear Index band?

Sam (bassist, BLACKWINE): They are young and good technique and energetic; they are great.

Crab (vocalist, BLACKWINE): They are cool and stylish.
