SICKLES NEWS MADURA: Irsyad joins ship heading to Finland / Rony starts Decaying Flesh project

Irsyad (Sickles vocalist) first on left with his new shipmates bound for Finland.
SICKLES BAND NEWS MADURA: Vocalist Irsyad has started working full-time on a cruise ship bound for Finland. He has had this plan for a long time. The band is using additional vocalist on the stage (the vocalist of ANT KILLERS band). Bassist Rony has started a two-man Brutal Death Metal project called DECAYING FLESH with the guitarist of MORGOD (Surabaya). The band is signed to Swallow Vomit Production and are preparing now for their first album. There is no special news from guitarist Arie Sickles nor from drummer Haidir. Who knows what the future will hold for SICKLES band but I hope they continue and can record a full-length album. SICKLES is a promising band with technical skill, creativity, and energy. The lyrical themes are based on Madura history and mythology. SICKLES band released its debut seven-song EP Series Elite Disaster in March 2014 (500 copies) with the line-up of: Irsyad (v), Arie (g), Rony (b), and Haidir (d). A NEW DECAYING FLESH INTERVIEW WILL BE POSTED THIS WEEK [by Kieran James].

CD REVIEW: SICKLES (Bangkalan Death Metal) - "Series Elite Disaster" EP (2014), by Andrew Sick

SICKLES 2015-2016 line-up. Left to Right: Rony (bass), Haidir (drums), Irsyad (vocals), Arie (guitar).
Sickles (Bangkalan Death Metal) - Series Elite Disaster (Self-Released, now also available on iTunes)

From the metal f***ing lands of Indonesia and formed in 2012, Sickles come with their first EP entitled "Series Elite Disaster"! Sickles perform a Brutal Death f***ing Metal with a big side of Death Metal and you can also find in this f***ing diversified disk some Black Metal and Grindcore influences and some technical moments! Muhammad Irsyad (Vocals), Arie Hardiyanto (Guitars), Roni Hardiyanto (Bass) and Haidir Arief Firdaus (Drums) are fulfilling their roles f***ing perfectly by performing an inspired, creative and f***ing brutal musick! "Series Elite Disaster" contains a very good production, a f***ing good mixing and sound, nothing spectacular but giving a raw result with f***ing good quality at all f***ing levels and a bass sound very present! The four Indonesian sickos have made an excellent f***ing job, very good vocals of Irsyad which can seems sometimes a bit redundant but is still f***ing enjoyable, f***ing great riffs in general from Arie and Roni with many good, catchy and some f***ing great bass parts, same thing on the drums side performed by Haidir, very good, f***ing fast and adding some insane f***ing moments! With its seven songs (one intro / one outro) and 20 f***ing minutes, this f***ing shit is very enjoyable, some truly f***ing brutal songs like "Arrival" or "Sabda Busuk Penguasa" but may contain some slightly weaker f***ing moments on songs like "In Carok We Blast" or "Apocalypse" and you can also find some clean symphonic or grindcore vocals! Despite its shortcomings, I think Sickles did a very good f***ing job with "Series Elite Disaster" by their imaginative side they still managed to stand out from the f***ing mass of bands everywhere and is a band to check for every true Death Metallers in the f***ing heart and we can only hope some great future shits from this f***ing awesome band! Very Good F***ing Shit! 7/10. [This review was first published by Andrew Sick of Sick Reviews on 1 January 2015 and is used here with his kind permission.]

SICKLES band, 4 December 2014 @ Bangkalan. Left to Right: Rony (bass proudly wearing the shirt of VALERIAN SURABAYA), Irsyad (vocals), Haidir (drums also plays for KREMASI, Bangkalan Metalcore), and Arie (guitar).
Our interview with Irsyad, Arie, and Rony of Sickles (Madura Pride Death Metal), Bangkalan, Madura Island, 4 December 2014
Interpretation Bahasa Indonesian / Bahasa Inggris by: Ms. Dhinie (VALERIAN road manager)
Band line-up 2012: Arie (Guitar); Irsyad (Vocals); Anton (Bass); Bayu (Drums)
Band line-up 2013-15: Arie (Guitar); Irsyad (Vocals); Rony (Bass); Haidir (Drums)

Rony Sickles @ Bangkalan
Kieran James (Busukwebzine): Please tell us your background.

Irsyad (SICKLES vocalist): My name is Mohd. Irsyad. Before I like metal I liked rock music. Then I met Arie Sickles. Arie taught me about metal music. He always told me about metal and about all the genres like death, black, and the other genres.

KJ: Did you have any other band before you joined SICKLES?

Irsyad: Yes, I had a rock-band called BOLU (meaning “cake”).

Dhinie (ALLEGREA SURABAYA): What were the events that led you to join SICKLES?

Irsyad: Arie asked me to study about vocal. I tried to look for it on YouTube, about death-metal vocal technique.

KJ: Did SICKLES band have any other vocalist before you?

Irsyad: No other vocalist.

KJ: What year did you first join?

Irsyad: 2012. The first formation included Antony Maulana from MUTILATION AGGRESSION as bassist. There was also Merza Bayu from TYRANNICAL MIRROR (drummer), Arie (guitar), and Irsyad (vocals). From that formation we had two songs: 1. Serangan Fajar, and 2. Amarah Bumi.

About 2013 Antony Maulana left the band. Bayu also left at the same time. Bayu wanted to study at one of the universities in Bangkalan. They also both wanted to concentrate on their own bands. Arie and I looked for a new drummer and bassist. We chose Rony (bass) and Haidir (drums). We got a new formation. From this formation we had the EP album Series Elite Disaster. There are seven tracks, one intro, one outro, and five other tracks.

KJ: What cities did you play shows so far?

Irsyad: Surabaya, Lamongan, Sidoarjo, Malang, Madiun, Tuban, and Bangkalan.

Cute chick @ Bangkalan
KJ: Who wrote the song lyrics for Series Elite Disaster?

Irsyad: Arie and me.

KJ: Who had the idea to write about the Madura history?

Irsyad: Arie.

KJ: This makes the band very special.

Irsyad: Ya.

KJ: Who is the record label?

Irsyad: Self-released.

KJ: How many copies?

Irsyad: 500 copies. We have a distributor (Brutal Infection Records from Jakarta) who helped us but only for 200 pieces. We sell the other 300 copies by ourselves.

KJ: How many did you sell?

Rony (bassist): We already sold more than 200.

KJ: What is the response of the metal community to the CD?

Rony: We had a good response. Also the reviewers from outside Indonesia made a review (Sick Reviews and Servileinsurrection.com). This website Servileinsurrection.com said in the review that we sounded like the band VITAL REMAINS.

Arie (guitarist): If you live close to Andrew Sick we would like you to hand him the CD Series Elite Disaster.

KJ: What is your comment about Bangkalan metal community?

Arie: The metal community here is quite different to Bandung. In Bandung for one band they have diehard fans for that band. Here the community is just the musicians only and so we all support each other.

Dhinie: Is the metal community here big?

Arie: No.

Rony Sickles and Kieran James @ Bangkalan, 4/12/2014
KJ: How many people including the fans?

Arie: About 100. We usually get an impact from Surabaya. If Surabaya goes Death Metal here will also go Death Metal. If Surabaya goes hardcore music here will also go hardcore music. There are some bands here that struggle within their genre. They do not follow the trends from Surabaya. They stay faithful to the genre. They don’t just switch genres every second day.

Irsyad: There are seven bands in Bangkalan that keep true to their genres: 1 BULLRACE (HC), 2 SICKLES (DM), 3 RAJAM (BM), 4 TYRANNICAL MIRROR (Deathcore), 5 MUTILATION AGGRESSION (Brutal DM), 6 KREMASI (Metalcore), and 7 ANT KILLER (Deathcore).

Andi BULLRACE with SICKLES' CD
Dhinie: Do you feel it is difficult to learn how to growl? You get it perfectly.

Irsyad: I feel pain in the throat.

Dhinie: For how long did you study it?

Irsyad: Three months.

Dhinie: And you sing this like this already?

Irsyad: Yes.

Dhinie: Your pronunciation is clear. That is what is so difficult.

KJ: Who are your influences for vocal?

Irsyad: DEAD VERTICAL from Jakarta (grindcore), SIKSA KUBUR, and Japrax (ex-vocalist SIKSA KUBUR).

KJ: So do you enjoy playing with the other band members?

Irsyad: I feel good in SICKLES. SICKLES is like my family.

KJ: What is the future plan for SICKLES now?

Irsyad: I am about to leave the band because I am going to join a cruise ship.

Arie Sickles, Rony Sickles, Dhinie Allegrea
Dhinie: Do you have a plan for a new vocalist?

Arie: We will try to find a new vocalist but it is quite difficult to find one here.

KJ: I suggest Niza!

Dhinie: Niza has already left the metal scene.

KJ: We have to bring her back.

KJ: Do you think the metal scene can grow more here?

Arie: Actually Yayak from RAJAM already made a family tree of the metal bands in Madura. He found that it is quite hard for the scene to grow here. The reason is that the government does not support it and it is hard to organize small gigs. We mean the Bangkalan Government. That is why we make the expansion to Surabaya to make gigs.

KJ: What are your favourite bands from Indonesia?

Irsyad: SIKSA KUBUR and DEATH VOMIT.

Rony: SIKSA KUBUR.

Arie: SIKSA KUBUR and CARNIVORE (from Tangerang, Banten province).

KJ: What is the biggest crowd you played for?

Irsyad Sickles and Arie Sickles
Arie: When we played at Sidoarjo Extreme Metal Festival III. The guest star was SIKSA KUBUR. There were around 1,000 people. There was a huge circle pit.

Dhinie: Which gig has meant the most to you?

Irsyad: The first gig in Bangkalan with the first formation.

Dhinie: At that time Irsyad had an accident and a big bruise on his leg and he was forced to play barefoot.

Irsyad: The old drummer [Bayu] and the new drummer [Haidir] are both here today.

Warung Metal: Drummer Haidir with SICKLES' CD
KJ: What is your ambition of where you want to play in the future?

Rony: Hammersonic.

Arie: Australia!

CLASSIC INTERVIEW: Our first interview with SICKLES (Bangkalan, Madura Death Metal), 27/1/2014

Left to Right: Arie Sickles (guitar), Jack Frost (Busuk Chronicle), Rony Sickles (Bass), and Haidir Sickles (Drums) @ Bangkalan, 27/1/2014. Irsyad (Vokalis) could not join us on this day.
My interview with Arie and Haidir of Sickles (Madura Pride Death Metal), Bangkalan, Madura Island, 27 January 2014
Interpretation Bahasa Indonesian / Bahasa Inggris by: Dwi Yudha (bassist of Osiris, Sidoarjo death-metal)
Extra Comments and Extra Questions by: Niza (Vocalist Climaxeth / Osiris) & Dwi Yudha (Osiris)
Band line-up 2012: Arie (Guitar); Irsyad (Vocals); Anton (Bass); Bayu (Drums)
Band line-up 2013-14: Arie (Guitar); Irsyad (Vocals); Rony (Bass); Haidir (Drums)

Jack Frost: Please give us the history of the band.

Arie (Guitarist Sickles): In 2012 I departed from the band called Bumi Berputar (grindcore). After I departed from Bumi I made Sickles. I made Sickles with the 2012 line-up of: Arie (Guitar); Irsyad (Vocals); Anton (Bass); and Bayu (Drums). This 2012 line-up changed again in 2013. The Sickles’ name has a meaning. Sickles is a traditional sacred weapon from Madura.

JF: How many songs have you recorded?

A: We have two demo songs: 1 “Serangan Fajar” (with video-clip on YouTube) and 2 “Amarah Bumi”.

[At this point in the interview we all went to another room to watch the YouTube video-clip for “Serangan Fajar” and I must say it is excellent – Jack Frost].

JF: Tell us more about the making of the video-clip.

A: The video tells us about rebellion between son and father. The son is Ke’lesar. The son rebels against his own father. The father is a king in Madura. This is a legend of Madura. The father does not recognize his own son as his son. Ke’lesar rebels against his father for this reason. He has a rebellion movement which fights his own father’s government. Ke’lesar has revenge upon his father.

JF: What is the killing at the end of the video?

A: At the last moment of the video the warrior of the father kills Ke’lesar. He was fighting alone and in the end he dies. So he is a hero here. This is a true story.

JF: Jasad tries to promote Sundanese culture. Has your band got the same purpose for Madura culture?

A: Sickles has a meaning – the symbol of rebellion. There was rebellion against Netherlands here in Madura. There is a man called Sakera; he is from Madura. Basically he fought against Netherlands; Netherlands exploited him to fight against Madura.

JF: What are your influences for the band?

A: Siksa Kubur, Behemoth, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Hour of Penance, and Deicide.

JF: What are the future plans for this band?

A: We are preparing for EP album launch. We have the EP album already. After this we will prepare for the full album.

JF: How many songs are there for the EP?

A: We have seven songs for the EP.

JF: Where have you played shows so far?

A: Surabaya, Malang, Sidoarjo, Madura – in East Java only.

JF: Where would you like to play the shows?

A: We really want to play in every show but the Sickles’ drummer is still in high-school. This is why we choose to play only East Java first.

JF: Would you like to play in Bandung?

A: We would like to play in Bandung Berisik and Bandung Open Air. The drummer is still in school but if he has a holiday we will go.

JF: What is the reaction of the fans to the EP?

A: The metalheads really are interested in the Sickles’ EP album. Many people think because Sickles is from Madura and this is a small island they are surprised that Madura even has a metal band like Sickles.

JF: Tell us about the community of metalheads in Madura.

A: Madura has the community only in Bangkalan.

Warung Metal: Drummer Haidir with SICKLES' EP
JF: How many people are in the community?

A: I am the leader of this community. We were formed in 2010 and we have 20 bands; metal mixed with hardcore and punk are in the same underground community.

JF: What are the main festivals or shows you have here?

A: 1 Madura Glory Day; 2 Free Your Voice; 3 Bersama Tak Harus Sama.

JF: What is your favourite band from Madura?

A: The most iconic band is still Rajam. It is the oldest black-metal band in Madura.

JF: Are there any other good bands from here you can recommend?

A: There are only five bands now which are still active: 1 Sickles – death-metal; 2 Rajam – war-metal; 3 Bull Race – hardcore; 4 Kremasi – metalcore; and 5 Dark Side – black-metal.

JF: What is the relationship like between Surabaya and Madura metal scenes?

A: We visit each other and play on the stages in the other city. We meet together and play gigs together. If there is a gig in Surabaya we will come and join. Also the Surabaya metalheads will come to shows here. There is reciprocity between Surabaya and Madura metalheads.

JF: Niza, what is your comment about this band?

Niza (Vocalist Climaxeth / Osiris): Sickles is a great band because they have unique characteristics and a good concept especially in Madura. Sickles and Climaxeth sometimes play on the same stage and also Valerian.

JF: What do you think of women singers in metal?

A: I think Niza is the best using hijab. She has a famous metal band.

JF: What are the jobs of the band members apart from the drummer here whom we know is still in high-school?

A: The drummer is a part of the band. The band is our own family. We will not play in Bandung or Jakarta now because the drummer is our own family. Jobs outside metal are: 1 Ari – clothing distro shop; 2 Irsyad – videographer; and 3 Roni – operator of internet cafe.

JF: Is the metal popular among the high-school crowd in Madura?

A: The metal scene is really popular here but not the old-school. The most popular are Outright from Bandung; Hatebreed; and Devadata from Surabaya.

JF: What are the biggest bands to ever play here in Madura?

A: 1 Valerian from Surabaya; 2 Brain Damage from Surabaya; 3 Divine Hatred from Banyuwangi; 4 Diabolical from Gresik; and 5 Kuret from Gresik.

JF: Which foreign and local bands would you like most to see play here?

A: Siksa Kubur, death-metal legends.

Dwi Yudha (Bassist Osiris): What is the perspective of the society towards metal bands in Madura?

A: The society still thinks that the metalheads here are bad guys. Madura is an island with a good religion of Islam. The people here are devoted to Islam so they still do not have a favourable perspective towards metal.

JF: Is it easy to find the venues to play here?

A: It is still really difficult to make a show here because the metalheads need permission from the Government. It is still from a Kingdom perspective.

JF: Did you ever have problems with the police?
Andi BULLRACE with SICKLES' EP

A: Yes, we had a problem when we made a show. The spectators got drunk and the police closed the show.

JF: Why do you choose to play death-metal?

A: We will not play any other genre. We still think metal chose us not we chose metal.

JF: OK, what is your message for your fans?

A: We hope that the Sickles’ album can be heard by everyone and will be pleasing to the ears of the listeners. Be different and be yourselves!

JF: I see your mother in the house today along with your little brother. Does your mother support what you do?

A: At first my mother did not support me. But day by day year by year finally she supports me to be in a metal band. My mother says I’m crazy about metal but now she supports me.

JF: Your mother’s comment about the video-clip?

A: She says I’m crazy! My mother did not believe you will come here to interview me!
