Kieran James (Busuk Chronicles): Tell me the history.

Aditya: My band was born in 2013 maybe.  It’s not a good story, but I started a two-man band, I’m the vocalist and guitarist. I’m releasing a single in 2025. We have two albums. Current line-up: Aditya Prakoso (guitar and vocals); Krisna (vocals); Aminullah Ibrahim (Amin) (bass); Yogi from Viscral, Bekasi (drums- additional, live); and Raka (second guitar). Rama is not my member.

The single “Presage” is released by Comatose Music (USA). A full album may be released early in 2026, also with Comatose. The band name is Indonesian for “gnaw”. 

KJ: What are your main influences? 

Aditya: Deeds of Flesh, Disgorge USA, Defeated Sanity.

KJ: Indonesian bands, influence?

Aditya: Asphyxiate (Bekasi), Bloody Gore (Jakarta).

KJ: What do you think of Surabaya scene for DM?

Aditya: Surabaya is getting better with some new regeneration, and I hope it will strengthen the death metal scene in this city [via Google Translate]. 

KJ: Tell me about the picture of you in Ujung Berung in 2014?

Aditya: This is the first time in Bandung and made connections with other labels and bands. I signed with Groupies Merch label for the first album. Gerogot is the first band with Daemorph Art and mastering by Imperial Mastering, Colin Davis (Vile guitarist).

KJ: Any more comment about Bandung death metal?

Aditya: Bandung has a large city and solid scale from the past until now. I think they also manage and create a savage regeneration [via Google Translate]. I try hard to make a connection with Bandung bands. 

KJ: What’s your future plan for the band? 

Adiya: I’m more focused on making albums and albums. Because for life there are many obstacles. Some personnel are out of town for work. That’s the hard part of this band. So, I’ll just focus on the album. My vocalist is in Palembang for working. The drummer Yogi is in Bekasi. I’m in Tulungagung and my bassist is in Surabaya [via Google Translate].

Kieran James: History of the band…

Nendy Rizkyant (vocalist): We started in 1997. We released an EP Mindestruction (cassette format). Before Fear Inside, I had a band Individual Scum (death metal). The members were: Nendy (vocals), Arief (guitars), Pur (drums), Nanang (bass)- now he is coming back into this lineup now. The second album was Human Disgust (1998), Nendy (vocals), Bonny (guitars), Yamin (bass), Didy (drums). The third album was The Glorious of My War (2012), No Label Records, Nendy (vocals), Damar (guitar/bass).

KJ: What happened with Endro and Deddy? 

Nendy: Endro and Deddy, they only had four years with me and made one demo. 

KJ: Was there conflict in the band? 

Nendy: Actually, Endro and Deddy wanted to stay in the band. But I, at that time, wanted to focus on my family. I wanted to stop but Endro and Deddy wanted to keep going. I wanted to focus on my family at that time. I need more money; I need a job. I wanted to sell the band equipment. It belongs to me, actually- the guitars, the effects. I needed the money to start the family. Endro did not agree with that.

Samier: Nendy has a strong personality and Endro has a strong personality.

Nendy: The last word from me to Endro is that you will never get the best vocalist apart from me. This is the last word to Endro [laughs]. You will never get the best vocalist in death metal but me. I think the music and production for Dangerous Toys [Jagal album] is good, but the vocals do not match with the music. If I see Endro now, I just say “hello, hello”. He works for installation of studio. Honestly, Endro is a good guitarist. 

Samier: Metallik Klinik was a compilation that contained a lot of Indo underground bands, 1997. They had nine volumes. Nendy with Fear Inside appeared in Volume 9. Metallik Klinik was important to the underground scene in the whole of Indonesia. More people got to know Fear Inside and other bands in the Metallik Klinik Volumes 1-9.  This compilation had Jasad in Volume 1, Death Vomit in Volume 1, Trauma, Betrayer, Tengkorak in Volume 1 and Volume 2. This compilation is the idea of Ifan from Rotor. Rotor opened for Metallica in 1993. Ifan had the idea to make this compilation. He gathered all the bands he knows from Indo to record and participate in Metallik Klinik.

Nendy: The title of the song for the Volume 9 was “Mencengkram Dendam”.  The next single is “Putrid stench of hate”, 2016. (The picture of this lineup is the Fear Inside picture on Metal Archives.)

Nendy: The next planning is with new lineup: Nendy (vocals), Benk (bass), Biyik (guitars), Joko (drums), Nanang (guitar).

Samier: He finds it easy to recruit new persons. 

Nendy: Nanang was the founder of Fear Inside in 1997. First, he was bassist. Now he is coming back as a guitarist. 

KJ: What do you think about the young bands in the scene?

Nendy: They have a good talent, for example, Gerogot.

KJ: Your main influence is Cannibal Corpse?

Nendy: My main idol band. I’m a big fan of Cannibal Corpse, Chris Barnes era, CC is the pioneer of the genre concept.

KJ:  What are your favourite albums from Cannibal Corpse?

Nendy: The Bleeding and the song “Hammer Smashed Face”.  After The Bleeding, there is a different style.

KJ: What do you think about Bandung bands headlining here but East Java bands not headlining in Bandung? 

Samier: A lot of bands in East Java are influenced by Bandung bands in the underground movement. We know Jasad as maybe Jasad is the first band to release an EP [C’est La Vie, 1996- Yuli (b), Dani (d), Yagi (v), Yayat (g)]. A lot of bands and fans in East Java love that album- it influenced the guitar sound, the drum, the style. 

Nendy: The Bandung bands have good production in records and on live.  The propaganda is good [laughs]. They have the good monetary. 

Samier: In East Java, especially in Surabaya, the fans love the brutal death metal and Bandung has a lot of brutal death metal bands from Jasad to Turbidity …

Nendy: Disinfected.

Samier: The new school bands always produce the brutality. Surabaya bands make the headlines in the small towns in East Java outside of Surabaya, maybe in Sidoarjo, Mojokerto, Banyuwangi. And Bandung bands are more entertaining, I think, and more confident as a band.

Samier: I talked to Daging to be a headliner, Resick Fest 2025, and Turbidity and Digging Up played before them. They were guests. It is different, guest and headliner. I met Daging at Surabaya Death Fest a couple of months before (November-December 2024), I told them that they should play as a headline if we play a DM fest in Surabaya. They should have a dignity. I saw that Daging is a strong and very popular band now in Surabaya. They have many fans. I told them not to worry about people walking out. I told them that they are a great band and that they should headline Resick Fest 2025, and they did it (resick means: clean).

KJ: Endro said we should not have allowed this to happen in the beginning but it’s too late now. But now you are changing it.   

Samier: I tried years ago, James, and people walk out when my band plays.

NEW INTERVIEW: My second interview with Samier Tengkorak (Jakarta Death Metal), @ Surabaya, 30 May 2025.

My interview with Samier of Tengkorak, Inferno Music Studio & Rock Shop, Surabaya, Friday, 30 May 2025 (corrected by Samier via Instagram on 31 May 2025)

(Note: Samier is based in Surabaya but the other members of Tengkorak are based in Jakarta) 

Samier: Tengkorak disbanded in 2016. We are not active. We do not practice. We do not play the gigs. Last year (about November-December 2024) they want to reform. I told them that I can’t go in like before. But I still join in their management but not as a performer again. 

Kieran James: Why don’t you want to join again?

Samier: I feel I can’t one hundred percent anymore because of my lifestyle now. I’m not sure that I can join this band. In the future I don’t know. Right now I’m not in the band anymore.

KJ: You still play with the band G.A.S.? 

Samier: G.A.S. disbanded in 2017. 

KJ: What other activities do you do? 

Samier: Nothing. I just manage my studio. I have comic book store. I have simple lifestyle with my family. I’m still listening music. I still support new bands in Surabaya. I’m still watching gigs. 

KJ: Do you still follow OFM?

Samier: It’s not active. It’s just a statement. Yes, it’s a movement but it’s more of a statement. We still have our beliefs. We love metal but we stay with our belief. Because, at that time that you came before [January 2014] that statement came because so many young fans thought that if you are metal you should not have the beliefs. But it’s wrong.

KJ: You still contact Ombat [Tengkorak vocalist]?

Samier: Yes, we have WhatsApp group. I went to Jakarta last December and we met.

KJ: What are some of the young bands in Surabaya?

Samier: CPG (grindcore); Daging (death metal); Decrown (death metal); Fordity (death metal); and Gerogot (death metal). 

KJ: What is the size of the scene now?

Samier: I think the scene got bigger. Hardcore gets the young people. There is regeneration in the hardcore scene in Surabaya.

I had a motorbike accident in 2018 and my leg is broken. I need one year to recover my leg.

We had a plan (G.A.S.) to come back in 2019. And then COVID came. We had a break of three years. After that we were so excited to perform again, to come back in the band. I don’t feel so excited anymore. As a player we should practice every day, we should go everywhere for gigs. I feel not comfortable with those circumstances given my age. I don’t want to continue. They ask me to come back but I said to them I can’t do this anymore. 

KJ: How do you feel? Sad? 

Samier: Happy. Because in 1990 I joined a band (no name), a university band; we just play on the campus. We changed the name at every gig (laughs). We just play Metallica or anything we like, it’s not a serious band.

1993 I am the founder of Slowdeath. This is my first serious band. We have three albums. It is deathgrind. We have Napalm Death in Harmony Corruption style. And Slowdeath 1993-2003 (?) Then I joined Tengkorak. 

KJ: Are you the first generation of extreme metal in Surabaya?

Samier: Yes. Nendy is the first and then Edy from Wafat, Yayan from Venduzor, then Jagal. Jagal is a newer band than us. But the players come from the first generation. Endro and Deddy came from Fear Inside.

KJ: Keep going back to when you joined Tengkorak.

Samier: I joined in 2003 and made an album with them, Agenda Suram (2007). This is the fourth album from Tengkorak.

KJ: Did you join Tengkorak because of the beliefs?

Samier: I wanted Slowdeath to be bigger. I wanted Slowdeath to be a national band but to stay in Surabaya. I had a plan to relocate the whole band to Jakarta. It’s crazy at that time. Because Slowdeath when we played gigs in Jakarta we got a good reaction. Jakarta is more simple, it’s the capital, not like Bandung. Bandung community is a very closed community, just like Surabaya. When we play in Bandung we do not have a good impact. It’s possible to move to Jakarta and have an opportunity. But the other members don’t want that. This is why I joined Tengkorak. Suddenly Tengkorak lost their guitarist. I knew them for a long time, we became friends. I called them. I said: If you want a guitarist I want to join you.

KJ: But you still stay in Surabaya? 

Samier: I stay two weeks in Jakarta, two weeks in Surabaya, sometimes by train, sometimes by plane. My sister stays in Jakarta. It depends on Tengkorak activity. When we release my first album with Tengkorak, I stayed in Jakarta or two or three months to rehearse and practice and record the album. Because when we did the record, we changed the drummer two years before, in 2005. We changed the drummer. And I join with Tengkorak until 2016.

KJ: Did the band continue with the younger players? 

Samier: The persons in the first or second line-up joined again. The bass player, the founder, rejoined again. Ombat is still the vocalist. Ombat (vocals), Yoyo (guitar), Danang (bass), Rony (drummer, joined 2005), Donny (second guitar). Donny is actually the drummer from Tengkorak in 1998 and the bass player from 2012. Right now he is the second guitarist. The new line-up has one single just released.

Samier: Donny is a good songwriter--actually he can play drums, bass, guitar, he is so productive.

Deddy and Sari (G.A.S. vocalist) have a new band Decrown, they just have one single. 

KJ: What is the lyric about in the Tengkorak video? 

Samier: The lyric is similar to the other Tengkorak songs. It’s about Zionist. It’s time for the Zionist downfall.

We in Islam we believe the Zionist downfall is coming. It’s written in Al-Quran how Israel ends. Maybe for some people outside Muslim they can hardly believe what is written in Al-Quran. There is a big war at the end of the days, Israel and Islam. So we know exactly that in the end it will be the end of Israel. Right now we are heading to that event. We know exactly what Israel is. We have a long story about them, from Moses. They betrayed Moses. We know exactly what they are doing in the first Islam era. They always betrayed. If you read the books about Mohammed, it is about what Israel people did in that era--they always betray. 

KJ: Did Tengkorak get any recognition from other countries? 

Samier: Yes, especially from Japan. There is a Japanese label that always support Tengkorak.

KJ: Is there any interest from Muslim countries?

Samier: No (smiles). Tengkorak--we are not good to promote ourselves. I have a family in Bandung. In school they are taught the teacher will support you if you have arts or music talent. The Bandung mentality is special.

NEW INTERVIEW: Our first interview with VENDUZOR D.M. SURABAYA / Yayan tells why he left Jagal, 2018.

Kieran James1: Hai, bisakah kamu menceritakan sejarah awal terbentuknya band kalian hingga sekarang?

VDR1: Ya James....VENDUZOR didirikan pada tahun 1992 formasi awal VDR adalah sebagai berikut: Ali Wafa: Vocal; (yua): Drum; Abidin: guitar; Catur Edi: rytem guitar; Demang: bass. Awalnya kami membawakan lagu-lagu barat seperti Sepultura, Napalm death, Brutal truth, Cannibal Corpse setelah itu kami mulai membuat lagu sendiri dan di tahun 1997 kami mengeluarkan album pertama kami dalam bentuk kaset yang bertitle kan "LIVE AFTER DEATH" dan di album ini Vocal kami "Ali Wafa" mengalami suatu permasalahan dan tidak bisa meneruskan record di album ini. dan atas permintaan beliau (Ali Wafa) meminta tolong pengganti posisi vocalnya pada "Yayan butcher" sebagai pengisi Vocal recording pada album ini. Tapi di album ini cover kasetnya yang sudah terlanjur jadi. Dan di album ini pun mengalami pergantian pada posisi basist yaitu saudara "Demang" di gantikan oleh saudara Jack" basist pengganti pada album ini berikut formasi pada cover album VENDUZOR: Ali Wafa: Vocal; (yua): Drum; Abidin: Guitar; Catur Edi: rytem guitar; Jack: bass. Dan pada album kedua juga mengalami pergantian personil pada: Vocal, guitar dan basist Berikut nama-nama personil pada album kedua yang bertitle kan "PRESCRIPTION FOR MURDER" Yang di rilis pada thn 1999 dalam bentuk kaset pita dan di rilis oleh label asal Surabaya "BLOODY PIGS" Record yang di pegang oleh saudara (Samir). Berikut nama-nama personil di album kedua: yua: Drum; Yayan butcher: Vocal; Abidin: bass; Said: guitar. Dan pada tahun 2008 kami mengeluarkan ep album 4 track lagu yang kami beri title "COVERED BY THE BLOOD" Di album ep ini pun VENDUZOR mengalami pergantian personil sebagai berikut: yua: Drum; Yayan butcher/ yeyen: Vocal; Tree/empeng: Guitar; Dongki: Rytem guitar; Ali / Lii Bass: Bass. Dan rilis label asal Surabaya "NO LABEL RECORD" Yang di pegang oleh saudara (Fitra) di kemas dalam bentuk CD dan juga di EP album ini di sertakan album "PRESCRIPTION FOR MURDER" dan di keluarkan pada tahun 2009 itulah sedikit informasi tentang band kami VENDUZOR... Dan untuk formasi terbaru VENDUZOR saat ini adalah: yua: Drum; Yayan butcher: Vocal; Tree/ empeng: Lead guitar; Ulum pay metalizer: Rytem guitar; Ali Lii Bass: Bass hingga saat ini. KJ2: Bagaimana respon orang-orang dengan mini album/album/demo band Kamu? Awalnya kami memang sempat ragu-ragu waktu akan mengeluarkan hasil karya-karya kami James.. tapi ternyata respon dari teman-teman metal cukup bagus dengan mensupport dan membeli album-album kami dan juga kami sampaikan terima kasih buat teman-teman metal head atas supportnya....KJ3: Band apa yang paling berpengaruh bagi Kalian dalam bermain musik? Band-band yang menjadi influence & berpengaruh pada band kami adalah SUFFOCATION, DEICIDE, BENEDICTION...yang kami padukan jadi satu dan kami tuangkan dalam bentuk hasil karya-karya kami James....

KJ4: Apa rencana kedepan kalian bersama band? Rencana kedepan kami adalah ingin tetap solid dan menghasilkan karya-karya kami yang berikutnya dan seterusnya... temanku James...KJ5: Apakah lagu-lagu yang kalian buat menggunakan Bahasa Inggris dan Indonesia. Kalau di album kami yang pertama LIVE AFTER DEATH dan album kami yang kedua PRESCRIPTION FOR MURDER semua menggunakan bahasa Inggris. Kecuali pada album EP kami COVERED BY THE BLOOD kami sisipkan satu lagu yang berbahasa Indonesia yang kami beri judul: (HIDUP PENUH PENINDASAN) kalau di album yang sekarang masih dalam proses pengerjaan ini ada dua lagu yang berbahasa Indonesia "AMARAH SANG PEMURKA" dan "PORAK-PORANDA". KJ6: Apa yang kalian ceritakan dalam lirik-lirik yang kalian buat? Lirik-lirik yang kami buat kebanyakan tentang penyiksaan penderitaan pembunuhan dan luapan amarah, penderitaan yang kami tuangkan dalam bentuk lirik lagu-lagu kami. KJ7: Mengapa kalian semua suka memainkan musik death-metal? Mungkin karena ini sudah takdir kami memainkan musik death metal James ha..ha..ha..Karena kami dari awal juga telah terbiasa mendengar musik-musik keras cadas dan masuk meracuni jiwa kami...jadi kami pilih bermain di musik death metal karena pas dengan jiwa kami...

KJ8: Kapan pertama kali kamu menjadi fans band metal? Kami menjadi fans musik metal pada masa-masa kami masih sekolah sekitar tahun 1990 kami dengarkan lagu" barat mulai dari: KREATOR, NECRODEATH, SLAYER, GORGUTS, BLASPHERION, GRAVE, CARCASS, SUFFOCATION. Dan masih banyak lagi....KJ9: Apa yang Kamu katakan kepada orang-orang yang bertanya mengapa Kamu memainkan musik bergaya barat? Kami jawab dengan jawaban simpel saja James...karena kami suka musik-musik dari barat...KJ10: Apakah para istri dan kekasih para personil kalian mendukung apa yang kalian kerjakan? Memang kami mencari pasangan hidup kami/istri yang mengerti tentang jiwa kami yang suka bermain musik death metal dan kami berysukur karena pasangan hidup kami/istri dan anak-anak kami mau mendukung dan mensupport kami dalam bermain musik... James. KJ11: Apakah hal-hal yang terbaik dan terburuk tentang komunitas di kota kalian? Pesan untuk kawan-kawan Metalhead agar dapat selalu kompak dan akur tanpa adanya keributan dan masalah....Eratkan persaudaraan.. KJ12: Ada pesan untuk kawan kawan? Hal-hal terbaik dalam komunitas di kota kami adalah mereka dapat saling mengerti dan saling bantu juga saling mensupport satu sama lainnya... James...hal terburuknya sampai saat ini sih kami rasa ngak ada temanku James...Pesan untuk kawan-kawan Metalhead agar dapat selalu kompak dan akur tanpa adanya keributan dan masalah....Eratkan persaudaraan.. KJ13: Question for Mr. Yayan Butcher: Why did you leave JAGAL? I left Jagal because there was no connection between personnel because the band was run like a business; a band must have mutual understanding and understand each other like brothers.

KJ1: Hai, bisakah kamu menceritakan sejarah awal terbentuknya band kalian hingga sekarang? Ratt1: Halo...klo terbentuknya band ini di petgahan 2016 klo soal sejarah sbnrnya saya pribadi yg mempunyai unek2 materi yg belum bisa tersalurkan waktu saya masih di band Jagal karena saya belum menemukan masing personil yg ingin saya bentuk diwaktu itu...karena jujur aja materi saya terlalu manis klo di pakai buat Band saya di waktu itu (Jagal) yg terlalu brutal reff2nya.

KJ2: Bagaimana respon orang-orang dengan mini album/album/demo band Kamu? Ratt2: Antara bersyukur kaget dan gk percaya debut mini album #wasted_in_the_dark_hollow banyak respon positife di masing2 penikmat musik cadas khususnya death metal.

KJ3: Band apa yang paling berpengaruh bagi Kalian dalam bermain musik? Ratt3: Saya salah satu pemuja deicide, malevolent, marduk, dissection, dark funeral, king diamond, satyricon, burzum, hate eternal, immolation, entombed, grave, immortal, Mayhem, dismember, Benediction, suffocafion, aggeles oblivion, siksa kubur, death vomit.

KJ4: Apa rencana kedepan  kalian bersama band? Ratt4: Setelah full length first album..kita sudah mempersiapkan single materi terbaru Unscarred untuk persiapan jika gk ada halangan ditahun kedepan kita prepare untuk full leght album kedua...pokoknya berkarya terus tanpa ampun.

KJ5: Apakah lagu-lagu yang kalian buat menggunakan Bahasa Inggris dan Indonesia. 99% menggunakan bahasa Inggris dan kita sangat2 terbantu oleh saudara saya Daniel Natjard (owner Daztanians Record) karena jujur aja untuk bahasa Inggris kita masih mengandalkan Mbah.

KJ6: Apa yang kalian ceritakan dalam lirik-lirik yang kalian buat? Ratt6: Semua dilirik album dari awal sampai akhir kebenyakan menceritakan tentang malaikat yg terbuang dari surga dan berkoloni dengan iblis dan menyebar kerusakan n kekacauan dan peperangan.

KJ7: Mengapa kalian semua suka memainkan musik death-metal? Ratt7: Karena musiknya cocok ditelinga,bikin hidup lebih bersemangat di manapun itu rasa capek lelah penat hilang jika kita dengerin n mainin musik khususnya death metal...tpi telinga kita jga welcome sih dengan musik selaen death metal...dangdut aja saya dengerin kok...

KJ8: Kapan pertama kali kamu menjadi fans band metal? Ratt8: Kurang lebih masih umur 15 tahun waktu itu almarhum kakak saya puterin lagunya Malevolent Creation album Retribution.

KJ9: Apa yang Kamu katakan kepada orang-orang yang bertanya mengapa Kamu memainkan musik bergaya barat? Ratt9: Jawab ku simpel klo gk ada musik2 barat mana ada musik metal di Indonesia..??

KJ10: Apakah para istri dan kekasih para personil kalian mendukung apa yang kalian kerjakan? Ratt10: Saya bersyukur semua istri selalu mendukung tinggal basist kami aja (Rony).

KJ11: Apakah hal-hal yang terbaik dan terburuk tentang komunitas di kota kalian? Ratt11: Saya berusaha berpikir positife di seluruh semua komunitas di kota saya dan saya bersyukur mereka selalu bahu membahu ingin memajukan scene metal di kotaku tercinta dan saya apresiasi banget...terburuknya sayangnya itu terjadi di masing2 komunitas tpi biar bagaimanapun saya masih berharap entah or kedepanya biar banyak komunitas dengan beragam nama komunitas semoga bisa bersatu positife thinking dan tetep berada di jalur underground dan satu bendera khususnya metal biar scene metal di kotaku tercinta semakin berkibar di manapun itu berada, biarpun saya pribadi lebih tertarik dgn adanya forum dripda komunitas.

NEWS: Vokalis Yayan Butcher leaves Jagal to focus on his old band Venduzor (Surabaya Death Metal), 10/1/18.

SURABAYA NEWS: Charismatic vokalis Yayan Butcher has left Jagal band so he can focus on his old band Venduzor (Surabaya Death Metal). He was Jagal vokalis from 2014-2017 and he appeared on the 5-track Jagal EP from 2014. The new Jagal vokalis is Fendi Adrian. When I asked Yayan why he left Jagal he replied: "Because in Jagal I am just additional member, my friend. VENDUZOR is my old band".

Venduzor was formed in 1994. It has released two demos: Live After Dead in 1997 and Persecution of Murder in 2000. It also released a compilation CD Covered by the Blood in 2010.
