NEW INTERVIEW: Our first interview with Marsya, VOICE OF BACEPROT (Garut modern rock/ modern metal), featuring Man Jasad, 17 May 2026.

My first interview with Marsya, Voice of Baceprot

Sunday, 17 May 2026 @ VOB base camp, Garut, West Java, Indonesia

Interview length: 60 minutes

Sundanese pronunciation: [ba.t͡ʃə.prot]; bah-che-prot, lit. 'loudness/noise'

Q1: Kieran James: Please tell me the history of the band.

Marsya (vocalist/guitarist, Voice of Baceprot): Everything started in 2014. At that time, we are in junior high-school. So, actually, me and the drummer Siti we were already friends since elementary school. And then we met Widi, our bass player, in junior high-school.  At that time, we are in the same theatre community. We have very bad acting so our teacher, Abah, told us to be the production team.

Actually, the students that learnt there was 15 students. Our parents didn’t give us permission, so the members became seven and finally only three of us.

Q2: KJ: How did you create the song ‘School Revolution’?

Marsya: We created the song together. It’s the first time I wrote lyrics. And Abah helped me to write lyrics. It is about the education system. I’m bored at school [laughs]. I almost didn’t continue my school.  I learnt English by myself, TV, lyrics.

KJ. In ‘School Revolution’, I hear AC/DC influence, Twisted Sister, Anthrax, nu-metal too.

Marsya: I love AC/DC. Those are our influences. I use Gibson SG due to Angus Young.

KJ: The guitar solo is impressive.

Marsya: I’m not really confident on my solo. I say it’s so bad. After releasing the album, I think that’s my best solo. I did the musical video about 2017, 2018. Actually, we just go with the flow, with our feelings, we are angry girls, I think. Music is the only medium to convey all our anger at the time until now.

Q3: KJ: Are you surprised that you have so much success in England?

Marsya: It’s too far. It’s still like a dream.

Q4: KJ: Tell me about the experience in Glastonbury.

Marsya: Everything was amazing, the crowds; onstage except the toilet, including the people from there. After the show, we can do the massage. That’s the first place I saw the massage in the backstage, that was amazing.

Q5: KJ: Where did the band vision come from?

Marsya: The vision at first came from Abah. At the beginning, we did not know anything except to play music. But we were happy with that.

Now, we have a clear vision for the future, we can be ourselves, to say ‘no’ to everything our parents say- have to get married at an early age; have to stay at home; cook something for the family and take care of the family until they get old.

Q6: KJ: What do you think about the West’s attitude about you wearing hijabs?

Marsya: I’m a bit surprised by the way they see it as normal. We wear it every day. Many people in Western [countries] trying to understand about hijab and Islam and metal music itself. It’s new for them, I think.

KJ: Possibly because in the UK the largest Muslim group is Pakistani and they are more severe about the religion than Indonesians.

Marsya: Nobody there knows about Indonesia, they think it’s like Afghanistan. I have to explain to the media we are not like Afghanistan.

KJ: There’s more freedom here [Indonesia] now than in the West.

Marsya: Yeah.

Q7: KJ: When I heard about your band, I remembered that Man from Jasad is originally from Garut. I wondered whether he had some association with you early on. Did you know him from the beginning?

Marsya:  We know him since we started the band. He is a big influence on the sound. The first time I met him personally was in Wacken [in 2022].

[Note: While his band Jasad did not perform that year, Man was at the festival serving as an official International Judge for the Wacken Metal Battle 2022. He was there to support and judge the Indonesian representatives (the Balinese metal band Ludicia.)]

Q8: KJ: How do the Indonesians react to your band?

Marsya: At first, the reaction was not good at all. Because they think we are bad influence to other Muslims. They think that metal music is Satanic music, they think it is wrong for Muslims like us.

Q9: KJ: What are your future plans?

Marsya: We are planning to release second album; we hope it will be released next year. We want to do a second tour, and an Indonesian tour; that will be our first Indonesian tour. It really makes me sad [that we never did a full Indonesian tour before]. Now, we are in the middle of the process to release a new single.

Q10: KJ: What is your comment about the metal scene in Garut?

Marsya: I don’t really know, because we are [only] involved in the local scene in our early days. After finishing high-school, we moved off to Jakarta. Because the three of us, we were moved to Jakarta by our label, 2020-2023.

Q11: KJ: What is the philosophy of the lyrics?

Marsya: We just write about what is happening in our lives. That’s why we talk about environmental issues, humanity, women’s issues.

Q12: KJ: Are the lyrics from a social or religious perspective?

Marsya: We are not religious persons really [laughs].

Q13: KJ: What are your favourite bands from Indonesia?

Marsya: I think Seringai, Burgerkill, Navicula (Bali).

Q14: KJ: When will the Indonesian tour take place?

Marsya: I hope it is next year and I hope I can go on tour with other female bands.

Q15: KJ: Will you change the music style?

Marsya: I don’t know yet; we will try a combination.  We want to collaborate with bands from other genres; everything is still possible.

Q16: KJ: Do you think the three members will stay together?

Marsya: Yes, of course. We feel like as long as we can play the instrument we will keep the band. Me and Widi start farming together.

Man from Jasad [in writing]: Membangun Ketahanan Pangan Secara Kekal [Building permanent food security].

Marsya: You know the economy in Indo; we cannot just live from the music now. So, we have to find another way., be a farmer- if you need vegetables, you can take it from the garden. It’s as simple as that.

Q17: KJ: Will you still be playing metal at age 57?

Marsya: I don’t know; I can’t wait that long [laughs].

Q18: KJ: I think that you have a beautiful voice on ‘[NOT] Public Property’.

Marsya: I change the lyrics on that song many times. I was told that it was too bold. They say it will put me in the danger, but I don’t care.

Q19: KJ: If one of you leaves the band, would you replace with woman or man?

Marsya: We would just finish everything.

NEW SAFFAR INTERVIEW: Religious band SAFFAR returns with new promo CD 2018, 31/8/2018.

Our third interview with Saffar (Bandung Death Metal)
Date: Wednesday 16 May 2018.
At: Butche’s house, Cicaheum, Bandung
Interview with: Acil (guitarist).
Translation by: Popo Demons Damn and Teguh Prasetyo (Interfectorment).

Kieran James: What is the progress now with Saffar?

Gilang Acil Saffar (guitarist): We finished recording a promo, two songs.

KJ: To be released when?

Acil: July 2018.

KJ: Record label?

Acil: Hadeath Records from Bandung.

KJ: What is the line-up?

Acil: Acil, Iyenk, Evan.

KJ: Acil on vocals?

Acil: Yes.

KJ: Is there a plan to get a vocalist?

Acil: We still did not find the right vocalist. We only use the additional vocalist to help us perform (Andri Gila). Last month, we had a show in Tangerang (April 2018). Andri helped Saffar to perform but I am still doing the vocal. On the promo Andri helped as additional; there are two vocalists. Andri helped me to make the lyrics also. In the performance it is good but Andri uses a different character. Usually he is guttural but this time he growls.

KJ: Why and when did Ramon leave Saffar?

Acil: August 2015. He is busy in the other town; and Ramon got married.

KJ: How did the lyrics change compared to before?

Acil (translated by Teguh): It is still about Moses and Egypt but the different thing is that the lyric does not use such a religious approach like before.

Acil (translated by Popo): The lyrics on the first album use more religious language and sometimes use quotations from Al-Quran. But this time not so many.

Acil (translated by Teguh): Parjo is a more religious person and he understands these things more.

KJ: Did Parjo leave because he wanted to focus on religion in his life?

Acil: Yes.

KJ: Ramon too?

Acil: Not really.

KJ: Butche says Bandung Death Metal is dying; what do you think?

Acil: In the past, Bandung Death Metal had a place for nongkrong so the musicians could share and discuss everything including equipment, performance, and gigs in other cities. The BDMC is now inactive; we used to hang out at Serak (or Uus’ office) in Jalan Cihampelas; before, Uus was a shopkeeper in Ari’s place. For now, we have lost a place to hang-out. We just meet at the gigs or at someone’s place. It doesn’t happen as often as before. Now it is just person-to-person meetings rather than the community meetings.

Popo Demons Damn: We need to make the community active again; to nongkrong together. At Cihampelas, the regulation to relocate came from the Bandung government. They can’t sell anything downstairs to the pedestrians on the footpath.

Teguh Prasetyo: The relocation of the shop is one factor but it is not the main factor. The government wants everything to be in order.

Popo: The problem is the community itself. We still go to Papap’s house for nongkrong. The original people got older and have commitments.

Teguh: The mentality of the young generation is different now.

Popo: I’m in the middle.

Teguh: No, you’re old; part of the first movement.

Teguh: Those who made Bandung Berisik; they are the old-school, the first generation.

Popo: No, I’m a fan at that time.

Teguh: Popo rode the last wave; took the last bus.

Popo: I’m in the middle; I’m not too old, not too young.

[KJ note: Popo was in the tail-end of the original generation along with Bobby, Daniel, Glenn, and Uus.]

KJ: What is the plan for the album?

Acil: So many problems happened; we did not have members; we only had two people in the band; it was hard to make this album happen; this is why we could not make the album happen two years ago [July 2016, time of our last Saffar interview]. So we started again this year to make a promo.

Teguh: I’m a big fan of Ramon and of course Evan too, the new bass player. Why did you choose Evan?

Acil: Evan has the same style of playing as Ramon; he can catch up with Ramon’s style of playing and have the same understanding with the rest of the band.

Teguh: I was a little shocked when I heard that Evan left Digging Up; I had to replace someone [in Digging Up] with that level of quality.

Popo: I don’t have any question but I’m still waiting for their new album, I’m curious.

Teguh: Me too, a lot of people are waiting for the new Saffar album.

Popo: So many things happened to Saffar; I want to see what type of music they can make with the new members.

KJ: What is your message for the fans of Saffar?

Acil (Teguh translates): It has been too long, the time between the first album and the new promo. Everything happened to Saffar; I will put in maximum effort to make the music side of this album as strong as it can possibly be. I hope the fans like it and I’m sorry that the second album has taken so long.

[Teguh translates for the remainder of the interview.]

KJ: Does Parjo believe it is wrong to play metal?

Acil: Yes, he believes that playing Heavy Metal is not allowed (not halal) in his beliefs but the rest of us still think it’s OK to play music.

KJ: Is Parjo still proud of the first album or does he try to forget about it?

Acil: I don’t know what his feelings are but Parjo believes it is forbidden (haram) to play the Heavy Metal music again. Maybe he is still proud of the first album inside himself but we never know.

Teguh: It’s part of his history. That’s a new issue in this age, this time, between music and religion but I see that music is like a tool, like a knife; you can use it for a good purpose or a bad purpose. This is why my friends and I still play music. I’m getting pretty tired of this argument [issue]; for me the music makes me more close to God.

KJ: Does Ramon still play for Dismemberment Torture? When Ramon left it is not due to religion like Parjo?

Teguh: No, it’s not due to religion; only due to the work and that he must live in other city.

KJ: Is the promo sound different to the old sound and how is it different?

Acil: The new promo is not too fast; it uses more Arabic melodies.

Popo: That is why I call it Arabic Death Metal [laughs].

KJ: Do you want to ask Bobby to join Saffar?

Acil: I am respecting Bobby so no comment.

*****END OF INTERVIEW*****
SAFFAR April 2012: Parjo (vocals), Iyenk (drums), Acil (guitar), Ramon (bass).

Oleh Dr Kieran James (BUSUK WEBZINE) dan John Yoedi (BUSUK WEBZINE)
Personal interview: Bandung, 3 April 2012
Tambahan Comments: Popo (DEMONS DAMN & BUSUK WEBZINE)

AUTICED: Angga (bass), Gilang (guitar1), Miky (guitar2), Rio (drums), Rozy (vocals). Miky is elder brother of Rio.

AUTICED boys Rozy & Miky teasing Popo!

Line-up sebelumnya tidak seperti sekarang. Kita mengganti dua orang, vocalis dan gitaris kita. Kita dua kali mengganti gitaris. Gilang adalah gitaris baru. Dia menjadi personil kami ketika sedang mengerjakan album pertama kami Cemetery of Necronyrph (2011).

Gilang sangat menyukai klasik, music klasik seperti…

[KJ catatan: Gilang menuliskan nama composer favorit-nya dibuku catatan saya]

Bad Boys Running Wild!
Angga: Bach, F. Chopin, Dimitry Shocicovic, A. Devork.

KJ: Apa pengaruh musik utama kalian?

Angga: saya menyukai banyak band seperti DYING FETUS, CANNIBAL CORPSE, dan banyak band-band  Eropa. Saya juga suka band Australia seperti PSYCROPTIC.

John & Kieran with AUTICED
Gilang (guitarist, AUTICED): saya menyukai band-band Eropa, music Swedia seperti SPAWN OF POSSESSION, DISMEMBER, IN FLAMES, dan FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE (Italy).

Rozy (vocalist, AUTICED): GREGHOWE, FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE, BERZERKER, SPAWN OF POSSESSION.

KJ: Bagaimana dengan influence vocalis kamu?

Rozy: Chris Barnes, CANNIBAL CORPSE.

KJ: OK, lanjutkan dengan influence music, bagaimana dengan kamu, Miky [guitarist kedua]?

Miky (guitarist kedua, AUTICED): saya sangat menyukai BRUTAL DEATH.

KJ: bagaimana dengan band Indonesian favourit?

Angga: SIKSA KUBUR dan JASAD.

Gilang: SAFFAR, DEAD SQUAD, SIKSA KUBUR, BURGERKILL.

Rio (drummer, AUTICED): SIKSA KUBUR dan DEAD SQUAD.

Rozy: SIKSA KUBUR dan JASAD.

Miky: DEMONS DAMN!

[Semua tertawa.]

Bandung Death Metal City
KJ: Band baru favourit kamu?

Miky: SAFFAR (Bandung), FLESH AUTOPSY (Bandung), CATHARSIS (Jakarta), CARNIVORED (Jakarta).

[KJ catatan: Angga memberikan informasi sebagai berikut: Label: Wolfhound, Album: Wolfhound Metal Radio, Lagu: “Another Day, Another Victim”, 2011.]

John Yoedi (BUSUK WEBZINE): Apa pendapat Anda tentang pembajakan?

Ayyub Anshari Sukmaraga & John Yoedi
KJ: Mengapa kalian suka bermain death-metal?

Angga: Ketukannya sangat bertenaga!

Rio: Muda...

Rio: Sangat langka...

Rozy: Mengagumkan!

Gilang: Sexy, hot [semua tertawa].

EXTEND STUDIO, Glenn & Uus

Angga: Sama seperti kekasihnya [Angga berbicara tentang Gilang] – dia hanya mengikuti Gilang kemanapun!

Angga: Rio menyukai gadis-gadis Australia [Rio terlihat malu-malu].

John: Apa pendapatmu tentang BUSUK WEBZINE?

Angga: Kami suka DJINN (Medan), ENGORGING (Samarainda), CRANIUM (Medan). Mereka bermain bagus old-school death-metal.

KJ: OK, Popo, kamu terlihat sangat pendiam.

Angga: Seperti boys band? [semua tertawa.]

Popo: Seperti anak lelaki pemalu yang memainkan death-metal...

Angga: pemalu seperti kucing [tertawa].

Daniel (BC & T), John, Luk Luk (BC), Kieran
Angga: Syukurlah. Kami merasa sangat gembira.

[KJ catatan: Untuk metalhead Bandung yang menyarankan agar kami mewawancarai AUTICED dan Saffar, saya lupa nama Anda tetapi jika Anda membaca ini: ya kita mewawancarai kedua band untuk Anda! God Bless You dari BUSUK WEBZINE!]

KJ: Ok, kita hampir selesai.

Ketika penyelenggara ingin membuat gigs, polisi mempersulit.

Kieran, John, Popo, Bobby @ Bandung

Miky: Art work designer.

Rozy: Memproduksi merchandise band.

Angga: Mereka memiliki toko bersama.

Gilang: Website design.

Rio: Meroko dan meminum kopi [tertawa].

Angga: Merchandise – saya memproduksi merchandise.

KJ: Komentar terakhir?

[Interview berakhir.]

NEW INTERVIEW: Our first interview with Marsya, VOICE OF BACEPROT (Garut modern rock/ modern metal), featuring Man Jasad, 17 May 2026.

My first interview with Marsya, Voice of Baceprot   Sunday, 17 May 2026 @ VOB base camp, Garut, West Java...
