CD REVIEW: VALERIAN (Surabaya Power Metal) - "Stardust Revelation" CD, by Collin Brophy

Valerian - Stardust Revelation Album Review, by Collin Brophy

"There is a very special guest vocalist on Stardust Revelation. Her name is Dhinie and I am at a loss for words when trying to describe her voice, angelic would be one of those words" - Collin Brophy.

Introduction by Collin Brophy: Valerian is a six-piece melodic power metal band from Surabaya, East Java Indonesia, who started back in December 2004. With all the band members having the same interest in metal it made it easy for them to come together and start their own metal band.

After playing covers from such bands as: Iron Maiden, Halloween, Judas Priest, Stradivarius, etc., it was time for the band to start making their own music. In 2006 the band decided that they wanted to make their own music, so in 2007 Valerian produced their own song titled “Forsaken”.

Eager to write their own music, they began the process of writing and producing their debut EP called Dawn of New Hope, it had five songs on it. With the release of their debut EP, Valerian wanted to be a fresh breath of new air in the Indonesian metal scene, and with new songs and music written and ready to go, Valerian began the process of making their new album.

In the middle of 2015 Valerian released a single of their up and coming album called “Stardust Revelation”.

Band Members are: Ridwan – Vocals; Harman - Lead Guitar, Dimas - Lead & Rhythm Guitar; Edho – Bass; Daniel – Keyboard/Synth; Verrel – Drums; Dhinie - Guest Female Vocals.

L to R; Ridwan (v), Edo (b), Harman (g), Verrel (d), Dimas (g), Daniel (k).
Hometown: Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia.

Genre: Melodic Power Metal.

Track list:
1.   Awakening Of The Fall One
2.   Symphony Of Endless Desire
3.   In Your Hand
4.   Stardust Revelation
5.   Heroes Land Odyssey
6.   Elegy Of The Unspoken Words
7.   Sinner’s Euphoria
8.   My Everlasting
9.   Glorious Anthem
   10. The Triumphant

When I first heard of Valerian it was around July-August 2015. I was given the privilege of being asked to listen to and review Valerian’s first single called “Stardust Revelation”, which also happens to be the name of the album which was released back in February 2016. I was totally mesmerised and in awe of an amazing song.

With 10 amazing tracks in all, from the brilliant intro “Awakening Of The Fallen” which sets the mood for what is one hell of a musical journey, right through to the very end with the outro “The Triumph” (which fits in so perfectly), you feel like you have been through something so amazing and that once you have finished you want to start all over again. There is something very special about this album. It makes me smile when listening to it and it also put me in a great mood.

Valerian has created a master piece in Stardust Revelation, well in my opinion anyway; the production and sound quality on Stardust Revelation is spot on. This is one of those albums for me anyway that you can put on and listen to no matter what mood you are, I have already converted a few people already by giving them a listen to this amazing album.

Ridwan’s vocals are very strong and clear from start to finish, I could listen to him sing anytime, he is backed up by some truly talented musicians. I on occasions have been caught air drumming to this on the train on the way home from work. There are some really cool riffs throughout Stardust Revelation. There is a very special guest vocalist on Stardust Revelation. Her name is Dhinie and I am at a loss for words when trying to describe her voice, angelic would be one of those words. Dhinie is truly blessed with suck a truly amazing voice I would like to find out more about her and if Dhinie has any of her own music out.

I would love to see Valerian come to Australia and play live and that would be an amazing experience. I hope someone will be able to make this happen one day.

I don’t normally give reviews a number from 1-10 but for this album Stardust Revelation by Valerian I have made an exception, I give Stardust Revelation…..9.5/10.

These closing words are right from the band members themselves…This album was made with sweat and sacrifice from us, only for giving the best for all fans and people supporting us".

With VALERIAN band from Surabaya you always know you are going to hear high-standard material. The band does not put its name to anything mediocre. Fans heard debut EP Dawn of New Hope and the two pre-release singles "Stardust Revelation" and "Glorious Anthem" and we can be sure the new album will be excellent. VALERIAN play old-school melodic power-metal similar to Helloween or Queensryche or Savatage or Rainbow or Sacred Warrior complete with virtuoso keyboards from Daniel and guitar tag shred from Dimas and Harman. The best part of the band though is the dirty vocals from Ridwan, who has the technique and range to hit the high notes but is best known for a voice that reflects the hard emotions of a tough life. Call it Helloween with Vince Neil on vocals. His voice even reminds me of Australia's favourite son Jimmy Barnes. On this album we also have guest female vocals from Ms Dhinie (Allegrea band). VALERIAN is a band that deserves international recognition, a band that plays with spirit and fire [by Kieran James].

8.   My Everlasting
9.   Glorious Anthem
   10.  The Triumphant

Stardust Revelations explodes from the start, with drums, keyboards, bass and guitars which gets your head moving, and once the vocals kick in you just want to start singing out loud along with the song. For a song that only goes for around 3 minutes and 50 seconds, it doesn’t seen long enough, I listened to Stardust Revelation over and over again, I couldn’t get enough of it. This song has it all, fantastic vocal, amazing drumming, and with the bass and really cool riffs makes this one truly enjoyable song.

Stardust Revelation has everything that you would expect from a power metal band, but these guys went the extra mile and for me has made of the best songs of the year in my book. If the single sounds this amazing, then I can wait to here the whole album.

I have never been a real fan of the clean vocals, but the more and more I am exposed to such great music such as Stardust Revelation, I am beginning to realise what I have been missing all these years. I would love to see Valerian come and tour Australia and witness their music in person. I don’t normally give songs / demos / albums a rating, but for me this single is definitely a 10/10.

SINGLE REVIEW / VIDEO: VALERIAN (Surabaya Power Metal) - "Stardust Revelation", by Drake Chrisdensen (Ruins of Elysium, Brazil)

SINGLE REVIEW: VALERIAN (Surabaya Power Metal)  "Stardust Revelation", by Drake Chrisdensen (Ruins of Elysium, Symphonic Power Metal band, Brazil)

Valerian is a power metal band from Indonesia which is releasing their new single Stardust Revelation. I will keep myself from referring to another names of the scene to compare Valerian's work, as it would be unfair to their art. They deserve to be recognized not as a "band that sounds like this or that", but for their own sound...and what an impressive sound that is. As soon as Stardust Revelation starts, we know we are about to listen to something big and enjoyable to all fans of melodic and power metal fans and that impression is kept throughout the whole song. Even though it is a heavy and fast-paced song, it still achieves a nice level of catchiness with decent work from all the band, having great guitar riffs and vocal performances. The drums could be more present and faster, but it doesn't compromise to the whole ambience of the song. Valerian is definitely one band to look for in the future and their already released work will please lots of fans of the genre.
