OPINION: Sartorial Synonymy: Why we are Losing the Ability to Represent our [Metal] Identities through Dress

I wear black on the outside /’Cause black is how I feel on the inside /

And if I seem a little strange / Well, that’s because I am” – The Smiths
Qualifier: This article is not a piece on the superior/elitist nature of the metal and Gothic subcultures: it uses these subcultures as an example of representational change in London since the 1980s/’90s. All subcultures and scenes have value, though the metal and Gothic subcultures have been chosen as exemplary for this piece seeing as I have the most direct experience of them.
In the 21st century subcultural diversity seems deceptively low. There was a time in the 1980s and the 1990s where one would often see punks, goths, metalheads and ravers on the streets. However, these days it is not only unusual, but rare, to see any of the above subcultures represented. In this article I will argue that though these subcultures still exist, they have been pushed further into their own communities and that though there are more subcultures than ever existent in the 2010s, they mostly express themselves virtually. I will chiefly use the London gothic/metal community for argument, which I have been involved in for over two decades, and as such it is easier for me to see the movements within it and its projected changes. Moreover, I will argue that social media has created a society of increasing narcissism that manifests social insecurity, establishing a stranglehold over outward expressions of individuality. The need for acceptance and societal approval means that we see dressing subculturally as increasingly irrelevant while communities are becoming more and more marginalised.
It is important to note that subcultures do exist and in more varieties than ever. One only has to look at sites like Rate Your Music, social media, or the multiple existent internet imageboards to see that interest in subcultures is alive and well, with metal albums becoming more and more creative, diverse, and ambitious. However, expression of interest in metal seems to be more verbal than sartorial. People are not interested in “dressing metal” in everyday situations to represent their identity, “dressing metal” being generally defined as wearing black, wearing band t-shirts, leather or patched jackets, and any of the styles that saw a height of interest towards the end of the 20th century. It is also important that we draw a distinction between dressing metal every day and dressing metal purely for shows or gigs. The latter is ongoing, the former hardly at all: at recent London events for Ensiferum and In The Woods… the large majority of the audience dressed in metal attire, but on the streets during the daytime, this style of dress is now nowhere to be seen. Clearly interest in metal is still at a high, but dressing to represent it is not.
In the 1980s metal was about rebellion, not just in its message or its ethos but its tonality. The very sound of metal represented its transgressional extremity. However, in the 21st century a lot of people consider the rebellious aspect of dressing metal to be passé. My recent discussions with metal fans online showed that metal is not about rebellion in the way that it used to be, with dissemination of sociopolitical messages through metal – created largely as a backlash to the lack of such in the 1980s – as having served its time. Metal is no longer an appropriate vehicle for the passage of all political ideas. As a result, ‘dressing metal’ in everyday situations has become largely irrelevant. However, I argue that this is not the whole picture, and that, more importantly, dressing metal has become outmoded. Young people especially still feel the need to rebel, and always will do, so the question is: why is the paradigm of rebellion, as embodied through metal, no longer relevant, and what has it been replaced by [and how]?
Metal’s lack of cause for rebellion seems to be only part of the story. The reason for fewer people ‘dressing metal’, or representing an identity, is a result of newer social causes and dress styles that are proliferated through social media. People seem more intent on rebelling against each other than ‘the man’ or authoritative representation, which disempowers the former while empowering the latter. For instance, London student newspapers contain many articles on radical feminism, gender fluidity, race equality and rape culture, which are big current issues on the internet, and these are, in part, opposed by movements such as MGTOW and neomasculinity, which are discussed widely on YouTube and Facebook. These causes are often communitarily divisive rather than cohesive, creating factions and focusing on oppression while forging little positive long-term change. In short, social media creates a culture of microissues masquerading as neosubcultural revolutions in order to keep the public occupied through asserting largely inconsequential activism. Additionally, articles featuring infographics such as these influence many into thinking that wearing metal/individualist clothing is not only unfashionable but incorrect.
It seems to be working. Taking long routes through central London on public transport cedes no viewing of any subcultural representations, in stark contrast to twenty or even ten years ago. However, there are many people sporting beards, Ray Ban aviators, black slitted jeans or sunglasses with side shields. The energy of rebellion is now virtual rather than physical [or actual] which is a sign of the continually burgeoning digital age. Meanwhile, those who would want to dress metal most of the time see such minimal subcultural representation around them that to dress such would seem not only rebellious, but preposterous. We are more concerned than ever with approval, acceptance and narcissism. We are happy to listen to metal in the comfort of our homes, behind our headphones, or to discuss it on the internet. We can dress metal at shows which are ‘safe zones’ for acceptance and the margins where real-world communities have been pushed to. People do not want to create or represent an identity anymore, and dressing metal has become ostracised.
Like with any movement in society, whether noticed or oppressed, there are, and will be, anti-movements. It is this back-and-forth tussle in societies which keeps them energised. However, making predictions is difficult at this point. What we can say with certainty is that the older generations who used to dress metal now largely do not, either out of fear of acceptance from peers or just because they want to ‘move on’, while younger people do not dress metal – in spite of privately sustaining an interest – because it is seen as inappropriate or insignificant. Dressing metal’s lack of relevance is not a class issue either since metal, especially since the diversity of subgenres which sprung up in the 1980s, has large interest in both working and middle class camps. What has changed is the access which the classes have to each other through the internet, class borders becoming more and more blurred, and in many cases, unnoticed.
If there is one thing which social media has caused, it is a society which communicates intimately. We share desires, concerns, problems, images, and intimate details of our lives more than ever. In some cases this has direct positive bearing on our relationships and careers, but in many cases it is done for little reason other than for personal validation arising out of our insecurities, which are created by the very channels we discuss them through. Resultantly, the more we communicate intimately and share our similarities, the more, long-term, we start to think and act like one another. The net result of this is an increasingly homogeneous society comprising individuals who are afraid of representing their subcultures or identities except within those very subcultures where they operate. Ironically, others express their individuality through minor sartorial trends which are anything but individualistic. Though subcultures exist in more variants than ever, now they express themselves virtually or in situ, as mainstream media and social networks continue a covert influence.

GRAUSIG STATEMENT: CLARIFICATION OF GRAUSIG’S PERFORMANCE CANCELLATION, HAMMERSONIC (English Version)

GRAUSIG - OFFICIAL STATEMENT
CLARIFICATION OF GRAUSIG’S PERFORMANCE CANCELLATION: THE SOUL OF STEEL STAGE, HAMMERSONIC

17/04/2016
“On Wednesday 13 April, 2016 we, Grausig, received an invitation to attend the ‘technical meeting’ in the Hammersonic Office in order to discuss all matters relating directly to the technical set-up for the stage, event acts, equipment list, ID passes for band personnel and production teams, and the provision of fee deposits as to be received directly by Grausig’s manager. During the meeting it was conveyed that there would be two Drum-Set risers which would be available for use, free of charge, for all bands - including Grausig - playing on the Soul of Steel Stage.

On the day of Hammersonic, after unloading all the equipment, we made enquiries to the promoting team in regards to our setting up the Drum-Set on one of the nearby unused risers, as per our agreement at the aforementioned technical meeting. It was at this point that we were informed by the promoting team and the Soul of Steel Stage Floor Manager that Grausig were not permitted to use the riser as both risers were strictly reserved for exclusive use by the bands Burgerkill and Hellcrust. Despite there being five to six bands playing after Grausig’s scheduled set, and before Hellcrust and Burgerkill, and despite reminders of previous agreements between the band and the promoters, Grausig were prevented from using a riser. It was further asserted by the promoting team and the Floor Manager that only bands who had brand endorsements were permitted to use the risers, a fact that had not been discussed at the technical meeting and as such was not a part of the original agreement which ensured all bands on the Soul of Steel Stage usage of the risers.

As the terms of the agreement between Grausig and the promoters had been compromised, it was with much regret that Grausig cancelled their performance on the Soul of Steel Stage at Hammersonic 2016, returning the appearance fee to the promoters before leaving the venue.

Grausig does not intend this statement to discredit or marginalize certain parties involved, but hopes merely to provide clarification regarding the band’s decision to withdraw from the festival. Grausig would like to take this opportunity to thank all our friends and supporters who continue to stand by us, and to express our continuing support and respect for the operation of the Hammersonic Festival" [by GRAUSIG band, translation into English by Jason Xenophobic and Lauren Wilson, used here with kind permission].

OPINION: "You are a Funny Kent (Message to a Friend)", by Jason Xenophobic, 22/4/2016

YOU ARE A FUNNY *KENT*! By Jason Xenophobic

(*KENT is an Australian slang word used in replacement of the more crude word “cunt”. The word kent is often used among friends as a very Australian term of endearment, but also can be used as a most severe insult. The literal meaning of the word cunt refers to the female genitalia.)

You are a funny kent mate! So much so that I have to have a little chuckle. But honestly, I have to ask, who the fuck do you think you are? I have reminded you on numerous occasions not to shoot yourself in the foot when you are feeling as high as the moon - a superstar in your own head! Yes, that’s right, in YOUR OWN head! Sorry, please excuse me, I have to stop again to laugh at you.

So you’re only bringing a knife to a gun fight? I’m feeling like we’re in a spaghetti western here, and unfortunately you ain’t no Clint Eastwood. You’re just another bitch ass who happens to play guitar, coasting on your fame from SIKSAKUBUR! Without that mate, you are a nobody - a no-name face in the crowd.

As a personality within the music industry it is the public’s right, and my right, to critique your music abilities and accomplishments as a band. The same way that people critique art, drama and all the performing and creative arts. It is your responsibility as musician to take criticisms on the chin and either ignore them, or use them to better yourself as an artist. But you, however, not only winged like a little bitch, but you also crossed the line and made it personal. Trying to use tattooing against me? You don’t know shit! As far as I know - and it is something that I do have considerable knowledge about - I was the first Indonesian person to be awarded a certificate from the PTAA (Professional Tattoo Association of Australia) - as I was informed personally by the association - and have also received qualifications from Queensland University Australia, as well as certificates from the New South Wales Victoria and Western Australian of health departments . For a Batak boy from a small village in North Sumatra I consider this to be quite an accomplishment. Aside from these personal achievements I have also dedicated my time to helping my fellow Indonesia tattooists, including my sponsorship of Master Gede Supala Shotonk (who at the time was President of BTAC) to attend the Melbourne Tattoo festival. It was from this venture that Shotonk took the knowledge of infection control and hygienic standards to help progress the Indonesian tattoo industry in order to meet contemporary international tattoo practice standards. Furthermore, I was the first Indonesian person who was able to open my own tattoo studio in Australia despite frequent threats to my life because that’s just how the industry is over here! Well, that’s enough bragging about myself I should think - but remember this, I’ve been doing this shit for 3 decades so you got a long way to go boy before you can even think about throwing your insults at me.

So this is where I am quite amused! You think you can turn me against my fellow tattoo artists? Well, sorry kent, but I’m not like you, so quick to turn your back on those who were once your mates and fellow musicians - the ones who made you who you claim to be today! You have proven once that you don’t have the nerve to be upfront and honest with people, to deal with situations like a man, but rather you have shown the world how deceitful you are - bitching to the media about how “hard done by” you have been and attacking people on a personal level, just like what you are trying to do now.

And it’s a funny thing - I don’t have that jealous streak that your small, narrow mind is imagining I have. I applaud the people in my industry who stand out, who succeed, and who are talented at what they do - I don’t have what they call in Australia the ‘tall poppy syndrome” (you think you can converse in English, then look that phrase up so you don’t get offended the next time someone uses a common saying when communicating with you). I worship the Indonesian tattoo artists in Indonesia so much so that secretly I created the media site INDONESIAN TATTOO ART AND RITUAL WORLDWIDE in order to promote and celebrate the Indonesian artists and encourage the world to take notice of the unique talent that Indonesia has to offer. This is a representation of my pride and respect for my fellow artists, as opposed to me being bitter and spiteful such as yourself.

So again I must ask, who the fuck do you think you are? Yes, I critiqued the integrity and the musical ability of your band. Yes I questioned the appropriateness of the accolades been awarded Hellcrust by Hammersonic as I justifiably believe that such praise is undue. Album of the Year? Kalamaut has been out for a mere 3 months so forgive me for assuming this to be a extremely biased publicity stunt pulled by Hammersonic in order to serve their own interests as opposed to being an objective decision based purely on the merits of the album and a reflection of the people’s choice (but please don’t interpret this as my way to attack Hammersonic, as admittedly I believe they have done a good job for the last couple of years despite all the surrounding drama). This work of yours, in my humble opinion, is average and underserving of the hype that you have tried to create. The drama surrounding it is just that - drama! It is a gross over dramatisation which disappointed on every level. But hey, that’s just my opinion. What do I know? When there are so many Indonesian bands that eat, breathe and shit metal I know I am justified in criticising an industry that is so obviously favouring the very small minority - whether they have talent or not - at the expense of and to the detriment of the whole metal scene.

So if you want to be a rockstar mate - with your custom guitars (which you still cannot use to create any memorable piece of music) and “friends” in high places - then how about you try growing a pair and harden the fuck up! This is my last word on the matter, I will provide no further comment [by Jason Xenophobic and used here with his kind permission, 22/4/2016].

GRAUSIG STATEMENT: KLARIFIKASI PEMBATALAN PENTAS “GRAUSIG” DI SOUL OF STEEL STAGE HAMMERSONIC 17/04/2016

GRAUSIG STATEMENT
KLARIFIKASI PEMBATALAN PENTAS “GRAUSIG” DI SOUL OF STEEL STAGE HAMMERSONIC

17/04/2016
Mame selaku Head of Production Team dari GrausiG.

[posted via Facebook].

OPINION: "SAVE BUSUK WEBZINE!" by Jason Xenophobic (English Version)

Anyone who is not familiar with BUSUK Webzine this is a Media Blog which is very much helping musicians in Indonesia Underground Metal - both big name bands and less well known bands which are striving to be well known in the international underground metal scene. Without favouring one region over another BUSUK Webzine faithfully and indiscriminately writes about and interviews bands from all over Indonesia, even treading into unfamiliar territory such as the remote Madura, Kalimantan, East Java and West Java. Even for me, as an Indonesian born and bred, BUSUK goes places unbeknown.
The master mind behind BUSUK Webzine is Dr Kieran James, a lover of Indonesia and long time advocate for underground metal. Appreciating the struggle faced by Indonesia’s underground metal community, Kieran is dedicated in his cause, and is always on top of the movements in the Indonesian scene - consistently updating us of the antics of bands such as Jihad, Jasad, Tengkorak, Death Vomit, Jagal, Murtad, Warkvlt, Bleeding Corpse, Demons Damn and many more bands, helping these bands get well deserved exposure and accreditation.

BUSUK Webzine was had its beginnings a over five years ago, originally starting out as a social research project Kieran was undertaking through University of Southern Queensland, Australia, with a number of people, including John Yudhi, Collin Brophy, Jason Hutagalung, Corey Athos, and Popo Puji (Demon Damns), helping along the way.

Unfortunately, however, took a sombre turn several years back with the passing of John Yudhi, devoted contributor and co-administrator of BUSUK. It was at this time that Yudhi’s position was entrusted to a Mr. Michael Mifsud, an individual who had no previous contributions or links to BUSUK, or to the metal scene in general. Mr. Mifsud has used his new position, and his friendship with Yudhi to take advantage of the situation and claim copyright and ownership over BUSUK Webzine for his own personal interests, without any consultation with Kieran James. Through his deceitful actions Mr. Mifsud has claimed himself as the sole owner of BUSUK Webzine and is currently pushing to commercialise the blog, which goes against the original intentions of the true father of BUSUK, Kieran James, and against the spirit of underground metal.

Due to these current circumstances I would like to urge supporters of BUSUK Webzine to boycott the efforts of Michael Mifsud to commercialise the blog and to stand up and fight to keep BUSUK an underground initiative to represent the underground metal scene in Indonesia, which is and always has been Kieran James’ intention. We want this blog to remain accessible to everyone, in keeping with the true underground spirit, not just for those who are able to scratch the back or line the pockets of Mr. Mifsud.

As friends and fans of BUSUK Webzine we respectfully ask you, Michael Mifsud, to restore BUSUK into the hands of the people who have a legitimate interest in the original intention of the blog - to promote the Indonesian underground metal scene in its entirety, back into the hands of the people who sleep, eat and breathe Indonesian metal. The original intention of BUSUK was to create an outlet that could be lead by the underground metal community and fans worldwide - please let us revert back to BUSUK’s original concept and return it and its logo to the underground community!

Thank You \m/

OPINION: JIHAD band (Cimahi) - "The Great Sundanese Trendkill", by Jason Xenophobic, 29/5/2015

Jason Xenophobic
JIHAD, one of Indonesia’s most prominent Death Metal bands, have been around the traps and influencing Indonesian metal long before the word ‘Jihad’ gained worldwide recognition as being negatively connotative of extremist religious fanaticism. The current global climate has been, for many years now, trending towards “gimmick” music, wanna be one-hit-wonders, and soft-cock rock with a compliant audience being fed low-brow rubbish, saturated with false idols and talentless artists that fail to exhibit true musicianship. So when an album such as JIHAD’s ‘Origins of Rebels Angels’ comes a knocking you can well and truly say that the proverbial shit has hit the fan! And make no mistake – what you hear on the CD is the same awe inspiring, hellbent fury that JIHAD deliver on stage – no auto-tune, no lip sinking – just bona fide fucking metal!

Indonesia can no longer be considered the little leaguers in the International metal scene, with an increasing legion of albums being released from Indonesian bands. However, JIHAD consistently stand out from the crowd, with ‘Origins of Rebels Angels’ proving to be nothing short of a masterpiece and inarguably an album which EVERY Death Metal fan must possess! Above all, JIHAD’s music is unique. While most Death Metal bands rely on speed and technicality, to the point where every song from every band blurs into the same, mundane spiel, JIHAD’s ‘Origins of Rebels Angels’ offers a more conceptual approach, flaunting an amalgamation of Death Metal and Grind Core. The entire compilation of the album, inclusive of the artwork, is anecdotal of a hellish rebellion within an Arcadia, synonymous with a nonconformist fortitude.

Although Indonesia has in the last decade made larger their presence in the metal music scene, there have only been a handful of bands whom have broken free from the rabble, surpassing the mediocre to become Gods in their own right. JIHAD is one such band and ‘Origins of Rebels Angels’ is truly a testament to their formidable presence on the metal scene.

Quote by Kancil Jihad:
Today the majority of the non-muslims are afraid by hearing the words "JIHAD". Jihad is an Arabic word which comes from root Arabic word "JAHADA" which means "TO STRIVE" or "TO STRUGGLE" against evil and for justice! It does not mean killing innocents!
