Kieran James (Busuk Chronicles)1: Could you tell me the history of the band?

Answer: Purgatory’s timeline:

Purgatory was established in 1991 - 1993 when Lutfi and Al were still in school. Having been changed several times, in 1994, we used Purgatory as our name.

In 1995, with the squad still changing, we created an EP debut “Abyss Call”, which consisted of 6 songs. We recorded it in a cassette format using our own Double Tape Recorded, Hahaha. We produced just 100 copies.

In 1999, we released an album titled “Ambang Kepunahan - The Brink of Extinction” (RotorCorp/Musica) with our squad consisting of Arie Tulanx - Grwl, Lutfi - Guitar, Die - Guitar, Bobby - Bass, Al - Drum.

In 2000 - 2002 the band was idle because of the internal problems.

In the beginning of 2002, Lutfi was running the band again by recruiting new personnel, creating a new style of music. The squad was Mad - Mor Vocal, Sand Man - Vocal Scratch, LTF - Guitar, Die - Guitar, Ntie - Bass, and Al - Drum.

The band released a single “Pathetic” (ZR Production) and collaborated with Anggy Umbara a.k.a. D’Jackal and Bonty Umbara a.k.a. Bone. They both act as filmmakers for the video. Later in 2005, both of them joined Purgatory.

In 2003 we released a full album titled “7:172” (ZR Production/PRS/Sony Music Indonesia). This album also included our single “Pathetic”.

In 2005, Ntie (bassist) was out from the band and replaced by Bonty a.k.a. Bone. In this year also we welcomed new personnel: Anggy a.k.a. D’Jackal (Scratch and Synth). When Anggy joined the band, Sand Man was just focusing on vocal. Purgatory was officially running with 7 personnel.

In 2005, we released a single “Inside You” (Dragdown Record). This single successfully became the original soundtrack of a film titled “Gerbang 13”.

In 2006, we released a single “Beauty Lies Beneath” (Dragdown Record).

In 2008, Die (guitarist) resigned from the band.

In 2009, we met Bad Art (Stupid Nation, Jet Liar). Bad Art replaced Die on guitar.

In 2012, Mad Mor (vocalist) quit the music industry.

In 2012 - 2015 Purgatory was idle. We joined some gigs, and Mad Mor was replaced by D’Jackal. The problem was our squad was shrinking in number. It occurred because each of us had another activity outside the band.

In 2015 Purgatory was active again with new personnel Mad Pit (End of The Journey.)

Currently, we are preparing our next full album, which is projected to be released in mid-2017.

KJ2: How are the people responding to your mini album/album/demo of your band?

Answer: Pretty enthusiastic. Some of them were driving us crazy because they keep asking and they terrorise us to produce a new album. LOL.

KJ3: Which bands influenced you the most?

Answer: Woaaah, there’s too many starting from death metal bands such as Obituary, Hypocrisy. We also had the era of thrash metal such as Metallica and Sepultura, which are apparent in our riffs. We also loved the groovy riffs that we could find in the bands like RATM, Pantera, Korn, Slipknot, Mudvayne. Meshuggah with their absurd beats also inspired us. For melody, we were influenced by pop bands such as Sting and Bjork ….. And Al is the die-hard fan of Bjork. This one is off the record: Al was dying crying when he attended Bjork live concert in Jakarta. Lolll

KJ4: What’s your plan with the band?

Answer: We’re concentrating on the making of a new album, for sure.

KJ5: Do your songs use both English and Bahasa?

Answer: Yup. Some of them are full of Bahasa but some of them use the mixture of English and Bahasa.

KJ6: What were you trying to tell us in your lyrics?

Answer: Most of them were social critiques and about the positive sides of our religious life.

KJ7: Why do you like playing thrash/death metal?

Answer: Errr, let me think. If we’re trying to rewind, in the early 90’s we were starting to play music. At that time, metal was booming in Jakarta’s youth life. Most of the bands in the city were playing metal songs.

KJ8: When was the first time you became a fan of metal bands?

Answer: In 1988-1989 when my cousin filled me with rock songs from Guns and Roses until Iron Maiden. I thought I fell in love with rock music at that time and I started to collect and hunt for the hard rock music.

KJ9:  How can you answer the people that ask you why you do you playing “western style” music?

Answer: I just keep silent and keep playing that music. Lolll

KJ10: Do your wives and girlfriends support you?

Answer: Yes, indeed. That’s why we’re still in the band.

KJ11: What are the bad and good sides about your community in your city?

Answer: Sorry, I don’t understand your question.

KJ12: What’s your plan in the future?

Answer: Planning? Hmmm, there are a lot of plans. Besides the new album, we’re preparing new merchandise, tour, etc. We’re so much willing to create new things.

KJ13: What’s your most unforgettable gig?

Answer: For me, it’s obviously Soundrenalin in 2003. After we finished our set on stage, we were taken away by the security. We were wondering why they did that. It turns out that they accused us of distributing leaflets of another event with Purgatory as the guest star. We didn’t accept the accusation and protested to the security. We found out that the Event Organiser objected to our leaflets because the event was held by their competitor. We told them “Would you be able to penalise us for the things that we didn’t do? We don’t have to follow the ethics of you guys as the EO. After all, we didn’t bring those leaflets!” Finally, we were released by the security.

KJ14: Do you have any message to your friends?

Answer: Stay positive, keep being productive, stay away from drugs, pick the positive side of western culture, and don’t forget to buy our new album, hahaha.

KJ15: Why do you call your genre as “white metal”? ‘Haha, where did you hear about that?

Answer: We mentioned about “white metal” when we released the album “7:172”. It was just a joke. We teased the “black metal”. Sometimes we also called it by “straight metal” but currently we prefer to call it “simple metal”. Lol.

KJ16: Does one finger movement still exist and do you join this movement? (Question from Teguh Prasetyo from INTERFECTORMENT Band, Bandung).

Answer: We think that One Finger Movement (OFM) somewhat exists and somewhat not, maybe not, to be honest, we don’t know, haha. Purgatory had joined the movement when it was hype because we hadn’t met the other musicians that had similarity with our vision: doing metal music in the Islamic life. However, it turns out that there’s a gap between us and other musicians that are against OFM. Therefore we decided to no longer run an OFM campaign at our gigs. It doesn’t mean that Purgatory is anti-OFM, though. For us, OFM will still be in our hearts and we don’t like to see a rupture.

KJ17: OK, thank you very much.

Kieran James (Busuk Chronicles): Hai, bisakah kamu menceritakan sejarah awal terbentuknya band kalian hingga sekarang?

Lutfi from PURGATORY: Purgatory's timeline: Purgatory merupakan band yg terbentuk semenjak Lutfi dan Al masih duduk di bangku sekolah ('91-'93), sempat gonta ganti nama, sekitar thn '94 kami memakai nama Purgatory dan kami tetapkan sebagai berdirinya band.

-Di thn '95 dengan formasi yg sempat gonta ganti, kami membuat debut EP "Abyss Call" (berisi 6 lagu) yg kami cetak dalam format kaset, kami cetak hanya 100 buah menggunakan Double Tape Recorder pribadi kami pd wkt itu hahaha...

-Thn '99 kami merilis album "Ambang Kepunahan" (RotorCorp/Musica) dengan personil Arie Tulanx-Grwl, Lutfi - Gtr, Die -Gtr, Bobby-Bss, Al-Drm.

-Thn 2000 - 2002 kami fakum krn ada konflik internal.

-awal 2002 Lutfi menjalankan kembali dengan merikrut personil baru, gaya musik baru di bandingkan sebelumnya dengan personil: Mad-Mor-Vcl, Sand Man-Vcl-Scratch, LTF-Gtr, Die-Gtr, Ntie-Bss, Al-Drm.

-Dan merilis single "Pathetic" (ZR Production) dan berkolaborasi untuk penggarapan Video Clip dengan "Film makers" Anggy Umbara aka D'Jackal dan Bonty Umbara aka Bone (yang nantinya di thn 2005 mereka bergabung dengan purgatory)

-2003 kami rilis full album "7:172" (ZR Production/PRS/Sony Music Indonesia, termasuk single Pathetic).

-2005 Ntie (bassis) hengkang dr band di gantikan Bonty aka Bone, dan penambahan personil pada posisi Scratch n Synth oleh Anggy aka D'Jackal (dengan masuknya D'Jackal, Sand Man fokus ke vocal). Purgatory resmi menjadi 7 personil.

-2005 kami rilis single "Inside You" (Dragdown Record) dan lagu tersebut menjadi OST film "Gerbang 13"

-2015 purgatory aktif kembali dengan hadirnya vokalis baru Mad-Pit (End Of Journey).

-Dan saat ini kami sedang mempersiapkan full album berikutnya yg di perkirakan rampung pertengahan tahun 2017.

KJ2: Bagaimana respon orang-orang dengan mini album/album/demo band Kamu?

Cukup antusias, sampai sekarang mereka bikin kami pusing karena mereka memaksa dan menerror kami untuk mengeluarkan album baru hahaha...

KJ3: Band apa yang paling berpengaruh bagi Kalian dalam bermain musik?

Waaahhhh...banyak sekali, dari band Death metal seperti Obituary, Hypocrisy, kami jg sempat di era Thrash metal, Metallica, Sepultura sangat kental dlm riff yg kami buat. Kami jg suka dengan riff2 yg "groovy" seperti RATM, Pantera, Korn, Slipknot, Mudvayne termasuk Meshuggah dengan beat2 ganjil mereka....kami sangat terinspirasi. Untuk melodi, kami terinspirasi dari banyak musik pop seperti Sting, Bjork....dan Al adalah die hard fans bjork...sssttt off the record, si al waktu nonton bjork live di jakarta mengaku sampai nangis2 melihat pertunjukan bjork hahahhahaa...

KJ4: Apa rencana kedepan kalian bersama band?

Yang pasti kami sedang fokus untuk pembuatan album baru.

KJ5: Apakah lagu-lagu yang kalian buat menggunakan Bahasa Inggris dan Indonesia. 

Yup, sebagian ada yg full indonesia, sebagian ada yg full inggris dan ada jg yg kami mix indonesia-inggris.

KJ6: Apa yang kalian ceritakan dalam lirik-lirik yang kalian buat?

Sebagian besar lebih ke kritik sosial, dan hal2 pisitif yg kami pelajari dr kehidupan beragama kami.

KJ7: Mengapa kalian semua suka memainkan musik thrash / death-metal?

Kenapa yaaa??? Hahaha...kl di tarik mundur, awalnya (era 90an) kami memang mulai bermusik dimana musik metal lagi booming di kalangan anak2 remaja jakarta pada masa itu, hampir semua band pasti memainkan "lagu metal" pada masa itu. Dan sampai sekarang sepertinya sudah mendarah daging.

KJ8: Kapan pertama kali kamu menjadi fans band metal?

Berawal sekitar thn '88-'89, sepupu saya "nyekokin" lagu2 rock seperti Guns n Roses sampai Iron Maiden, dr situ saya suka lagu rock, semenjak itu saya mulai mengoleksi dan mencari lagu yg lebih keras dr musik rock.

KJ9: Apa yang Kamu katakan kepada orang-orang yang bertanya mengapa Kamu memainkan musik bergaya barat?

Diam aja sambil main gitar lagu barat hahahahaha...

KJ10: Apakah para istri dan kekasih para personil kalian mendukung apa yang kalian kerjakan?

Sangat mendukung, kl nggak pasti orang itu sudah nggak di purgatory lg.

KJ11: Apakah hal-hal yang terbaik dan terburuk tentang komunitas di kota kalian?

Sorry, saya kurang paham dgn pertanyaannya hahaha...

KJ12: Rencana apa yang kalian buat bersama band untuk kedepannya?

Rencana...hhhmmm, banyak jg, selain album baru, design merchandise baru, tour, yang pasti kami ingin terus berkreasi.

KJ13: Di acara apa kalian merasakan, itu stage yang berkesan?

Bagi saya, di Soundrenalin 2003, selesai manggung kami di giring oleh sekawanan security ke pos keamanan, sapai kami bingung dan bertanya2...ada apa ini semua?? rupanya mereka menuduh kami menyebarkan pamphlet/leaflet acara lain yg dimana purgatory sebagai guest starnya. Dan kami protes karena kami gak merasa menyebarkan leaflet trsbt, dan kami bingung, kalaupun leaflet itu kami yg bawa memangnya kenapa? Rupanya mereka (security) di tegur oleh pihak penyelenggara karena acara mereka (EO) tercemar oleh leaflet yg mencantumkan logo perusahaan lawan mereka. Ooohhh come ooonnn??? Kami marah...km bilang begini ke mereka, "Andai leaflet ini memang kami yg bawa terus kalian mau apa??? Mau nuntut kami?? Kalian sadar gak kl kode etik ini berlaku untuk kalangan kalian aja? Bukan untuk kami...so kami gak bersalah, apalagi leaflet itu bukan kami yg bawa". Akhirnya kami di bebaskan...hahaha...

KJ14: Ada pesan untuk kawan kawan?

Stay positive, terus berkarya, jauhin narkoba, ambil budaya barat yg baik2 aja dan jangan lupa beli album purgatory haha.

KJ15: Why do you call your genre as ‘white metal’?

Haha...kamu dengar dr mana?? Kami memang pernah mengatakan "white metal" waktu era album 7:172, hanya buat candaan aja, ngeledek black metal haha, kadang juga kami menyebutnya dengan "Straight Metal", tp sekarang kami lebih suka dengan "Simply Metal" hahaha... 

KJ16: Does One Finger Movement still exist and do you join this movement? (Question from Teguh Prasetyo from INTERFECTORMENT band, Bandung)

Untuk One Finger Movement (OFM), mungkin masih eksis, mungkin tidak, dan sejujurnya kami tidak tahu haha. Awal maraknya OFM, purgatory sempat ikutan karena pada waktu itu dalam OFM kami bertemu dengan rekan2 musisi metal yg satu visi, yaitu bermusik metal dalam kehidupan yg islami. Tetapi makin kesini malah membuat perpecahan/gap antara kami dan musisi metal lainnya yg gak setuju dengan adanya OFM, dan akhirnya kami pribadi memutuskan untuk tidak lg mengkampanyekan OFM dlm setiap gig kami, tp bukan artinya purgatory anti OFM. Untuk kami, OFM cukup di dalam hati kami masing2. Dan kami tidak suka melihat adanya perpecahan.

NEW INTERVIEW: Our first interview with KODUSA (Jakarta White Metal) (English version), 27/11/2015

Kieran James aka Jack Frost1: Hi, could you please tell us the history of the band?

KJ1: This band was established by Ivan ‘Bhatocx’ Wijaya on July 19^th 1998. At that time, the band formation was different. On the leading of Ivan KODUSA the formation was changed several times. Before Ivan’s changes the band consisted of Ivan (guitar), TJ (female vocalist), Dicky (male vocalist), Zack (bass) and Beni (drum).

On December 2^nd 1999, Ivan passed away because of leukaemia. Considering there’s a vacant place, Dicky the vocalist suggested Lulu to replaced Ivan as a guitarist. It was several figures who took the role as a guitarist. Some of them are Bemby and Fajar. However, Lulu is the one who still remains.

Kodusa then experienced another change, which was on female vocalist. Tj (TJ Extravaganza) signed off from the band and chose to continue her solo performance. Eventually, Dicky also decided to quit the band and joined with another band. Lulu the guitarist then suggested his sister Lila to fill the gap on Kodusa by being the female vocalist. There was also Ives (Ivan’s dad) who recommended Ives (Ivan’s brother) to be the male vocalist.

After the band has got its new member, they decided to create a new nuance for their music. Based on Lulu’s idea, the band added Turntable and Sampling instrument to be played by another new member, Amy, who is a female DJ.

I was not so long after the arrival of new instruments that there was another dynamic occurred in the band. Beni the drummer left the band and was substituted by AL, former drummer of Purgatory Band.

In the early of 2000, Kodusa was totally reformed. The original band member remaining was Zack the bassist. Also in this year, the band made its new formation consisting of Ivan (male lead vocalist), Lila (female vocalist), Zack (bassist), Lulu (guitar), Amy (DJ), and Al (drum). Unfortunately, this formation lasted just 2 years. Again, Kodusa was facing shortage of band members. Amy quit because she could not manage to balance her office life. Three years later, in 2004, Al who became Lulu’s husband had to be dismissed from the band because of his involvement in another band called Purgatory. Within the recent Kodusa’s minimalist formation, there was a drummer from TABOO band who acted as an additional drummer for Kodusa.

Despite a lot of changes happening Kodusa still went on its productive way and contributed to music. KODUSA’s song titled ‘Damai’ has been listed on compilation album called “Revolution of Sound2”. The album was released in 2005 by Sony/BMG Indonesia.

When this article was written, Kodusa is going back to minimalist formation. Kodusa put their distinction on their song and lyrics; vocal character of Ives and Lila; attractive bass playing by Zack; solo guitar by Lulu; and Rala (their new drummer). Interestingly, Rala was met with the band ‘accidentally’ when he was performing Taraweh praying at Ramadan 2007.

Note: Former additional drummer, Oky, now became drummer of famous Indonesian band Andra and The Backbone.

KJ2: How do the people respond to your mini album / album / demo?

Alhamdulillah (Thank God), their response was generally good. They were happy and enthusiastic with our single and songs. Some of our friends who were listening to our songs even memorised our lyrics very well. Hey also gave us support by buying our album and merchandise. Some of them also gave us some feedbacks and shared with us about our aims and our vision in music industry.

KJ3: Which band influenced you the most?

Each of us has different favourite bands and different inspirations that influenced our musical taste. And none of them has to be metal band. We love Korn, Deftones, Mudvayne, Dream Theater, A Perfect Circle, Incubus, Nirvana, Bjork, Alanis Morisette, etc. We also idolise local band who play religious music such as Bimbo.

KJ4: What is your future plan with this band?

Actually, we always wanted to finish our first album because in the meantime, we released some singles that we shared to some compilations, whether it’s an indie or semi indie compilations. Our purpose was to compile our singles to became one album. We also planned to launch the album with the help of some musicians, who contributed to our songs as a backing vocalist. They are: Iman, Anton (J-Rock band); Eno and Choky (Netral Band); Bonnie (Dead Squad); Al, Lutfi, Bounty, and Apit (Purgatory Band).

KJ5: Do you also create songs using English?

Yes. Most of our songs are combination where some part is using English.

KJ6: What do you trying to tell on the lyrics that you have made?

Our lyrics have some themes ranging from social matters, peace, justice, and some of them are religious. Religious in this context was some story and legend based on our holy Quran.

The point is, we are trying to deliver the positive message from it through our lyrics and music. We are also trying to pass the message by using appropriate words, as polite as possible.

KJ7:  Why do you guys like death metal music?

We love metal music, partly because it has a ‘hard’ rhythm, energy, and its full of passion. However, we try to balance the beat of the music with our soft and ‘anti - violence’ lyrics.

KJ8: When was the first time you’ve been the fans of metal?

Hmmm, not sure when is it. Each member of the band has different experiences about that. Perhaps, we started to be fans when we saw some bands like Metallica, Sepultura, Slipknot which were really popular in Indonesia.

KJ9: What would you say to the people who ask why you play western style music?

Hmmm.. not all of western culture is bad or negative. We love western metal musicians and just enjoyed their music, their techniques, and that’s it. About the relatively ‘free’ lifestyle (although not all of westerners are doing that)… we were trying to get rid of it (the lifestyles). We’re not naïve that we have members who did terrible things in the past, being struck with drugs… but it has been the past and they’re clear now. They’re keeping doing a healthy life now and stay away from drugs.

We thought that as long as we could adapt with the positive side and stay away from negative stuff, western culture is nothing to worry about.

KJ10: Do your wives or girlfriends support what you’ve been doing?

Most of them are really supportive of each other. We’ve got husband and wife vocalist at Kodusa. As well as Lulu, our guitarist, who is Al’s wife. Al is playing drums at metal band Purgatory, so Lulu and Al is a metal-musician couple. Moreover, Zack (bass) and Rala (drums) are also supported by their wives.

KJ11: What would be the good and bad things about the community in your city?

We live in Indonesia, which applies eastern culture, and well known for the people's friendliness. We also still respect our heritage and local wisdoms. Morality and good attitude are everything here. As well as how religious the people are. Apparently, people here are very diverse and respect each other. So, generally speaking, lack of morality was just practised by a small number of people.

KJ12: What’s your future plan?

Besides creating album, launching the album, creating video clips, we really want to be contributing to music concerts especially those which emphasise social and religious aims within the concert. We also are looking forward to being a part of social activities.

KJ13: What is your most memorable performance?

Almost every gig has its own memorable moment. Maybe the most memorable was the event held by local metal bands. This event theme was “Approach Deen Avoids Sins”. We did not expect that the folks would be really enthusiastic. Most of them, we believe, are those with pure life goals: avoid bad things and do things that are worthwhile for others. Some of them even managed to expand this ‘campaign’ to their family and friends.

KJ14: Do you have something to say for your friends?

Hmm, maybe we have to noticing our self first. Disseminating the good deed is nothing if we ourselves could not implement what’s our religion been ordered to us.  Good syiar is not only spread by words but also by real actions. If we could act in a good way, we can say that our aim as a band has already been visible by our friend or acquaintances.

KJ15: Why do you call your genre as ‘white metal’?

We knew that the image of metal is opposite with goodness, which is always represented as ‘white’. For us, white means pure and innocent. White is also related with many Islamic symbols. We are trying to create a perception that, although we are doing metal music, we are doing it in a pure and innocent way. Trying to be in a way that blessed by Allah SWT.

KJ16: Does one finger movement still exist and do you join this movement? (Question from Teguh Prasetyo from INTERFECTORMENT band, Bandung)

As far as we know, One Finger Movement still exists. At the beginning, this movement was ignited by Ombat from a local band called Tengkorak. But, generally speaking, metal bands such as Purgatory, Kodusa, and some local bands have been applying sort of Islamic metal far before terms like “Islamic Metal” or “Metal Tauhid” or “One Finger Metal” was popular. This could happen because, as well as the majority of population being Muslims; there was actually a lot of metal fans here in Indonesia. One interesting example was during the concert we could have a break until adzan is finished. (Adzan is the Muslim call to ritual prayer).  Even after azan, everyone goes to mosque for praying.

There is still a support though. For example was happened to our fellow in Purgatory band. One of their single is titled “M.O.G.S.A.W”, which is an abbreviation from “Messenger of God Shalallahu Alaihi Wassalam” (honorary title for Prophet Muhammad). Then, Purgatory fans suddenly called themselves as “MOGERZ” or “Messenger of God Shallallahu Alaihi Wasallam Followerz”.

Although many people appreciate that ‘unusual’ circumstance, some of them are also pouting on us and feeling awkward about that.  For example in 1999/2000, some folks on the community mocked us as a “HardMus” band, which means HardcoreMuslims. But in fact, those mocked did not let us down. WE are indeed Muslims and we have certain obligation like praying 5 times a day, etc.

Yet, we are still confident with our identity. There are many local metal bands that have same ideology like us and they are also still proud of their Islamic values.

There is an increasing number of new bands with the same values though.
