Lustravi – “Cult of the Blackened Veil” review  4/13/16

Florida’s Lustravi is  a ceremonial black metal  4-piece hailing from the bible belt.  They bring you their debut album “Cult of the Blackened Veil”.  From the beginning the tone is set.  Serious, omnipotent, insidious.

The speech on “Evil Incarnate” starts.  I can feel my heart pumping faster as if I were climbing the tracks on a rollercoaster with tension building until released at the top into this world of hatred, lust, religious rites, occult, and suicide.  Vocalist/Bassist Weller gets in your head and has you believe and see what she does.  “Cult of the Blackened Veil” is a tool to open your minds.  The message is clear all you have to do is listen.  What I really dig is the Blasphemy  on “Cult of the Blackened Veil” is done in an offensive yet intelligent way.  Lyrics and message backed up by facts and knowledge drawn directly from the book of the holy fused with distortion, screaming, sub frequencies, and a percussive assault.. 

Half way through the tone is reset with McWorter’s acoustic piece which will bring you to tears.

I really found the whole album to flow real well from start to finish.   The intro brings the tension and then releases into an Anti-Christian tirade screaming tortured yet commanding highs and lows that remind me both of David Vincent and Steve Tucker at separate times which is extremely was nostalgic.  You can hear and feel the anger building as you are pummeled by distorted and precise rhythms by guitarists McWorter and Cook.  Drummer Keisler is solid like a machine hitting hard with interesting beats.  Plays to the song and not to show off which I’ve seen many drummers do. The closing song “Sabrina” is a requiem for a fallen friend.  It is a somber epic masterpiece.   A perfect way to close Lustravi’s debut album..

“Cult Of The Blackened Veil”.  An instant classic with an amazing production, thick, powerful with a lot of attack.  Mastered by Punchy who has worked with acts such as Morbid Angel, Nile etc.

The album starts with complete chaos on every instrument and only lets up for an occasional groove then back to Armageddon .  Half way through the first song something really caught my ear.  A Gorguts’ “Obscura” era style part.  I’ve come to realize the whole album has that chaotic overtone.  I consider this as an “Obscura II” although they definitely have their own sound completely.  There’s the same chaos, darkness, dissonance and bipolar changes.  When we(Flesh Consumed) played in Chicago with them, they completely destroyed.  Out of all the bands despite my normal pre-show rituals, I stopped to watch Chicago natives, Morgue Supplier.   Point being they are even more intense live, which is an extremely difficult task seeing that their album is solid  with a great production and intense as hell.   The music goes from complete chaos to come all together seamlessly.  The solos that are on the album are completely fitting to the style.  Chaotic, demented, and psychotic reminiscent of no other guitarist and if forced to I would compare them to Bob Virga’s (Immolation) psychotic choice of notes and the cleanliness and flow of Shaune Kelley (Ripping Corpse, Dim Mak, Flesh Consumed).  Every piece, from the bass tone to the vocal intensity creates a soundscape fitting of impending doom.  Tension and release is huge on this album to reset your mind.  Make your tolerance for the chaos die off then hit you hard again and again, punishing.  The dynamics are impeccable.  Being primarily a vocalist I highly respect vocalist Paul Gillis’ vocal approach.  He has a million voices and each one uttered is another demonRE released.  This and every time I listen I find a new layer or element I hadn’t yet discovered.  Morgue Supplier’s Self-titled release is a masterpiece, plain and simple. I will definitely continue to play this album daily.     - 9.5/10

NEW INTERVIEW BY COREY ATHOS (OBSCURE MUSICK USA / FLESH CONSUMED) WITH PAUL GILLIS FROM MORGUE SUPPLIER BAND (CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, USA DEATH METAL)

Corey Athos1:  - I want to start off by thanking you for the interview.. tell us about Morgue Supplier? Members, history, the works..

Paul Gillis (vocalist, MORGUE SUPPLIER): Anytime, it is our pleasure. That is a massive & long story to say the least. We are from Chicago, Illinois USA and started in 1997 as Jugular Appetizer. By 1999 we became Morgue Supplier. We have gone through many members throughout the years,  played countless shows with bands from all over the world such as Gorguts, Immolation, Incantation, Grave, Goatwhore, Possessed, Nocturnus, etc...,  and most importantly went fucking nuts as often as possible. 2 - You recently signed with my label Obscure Musick, what sparked that connection?

Actually, Shaune Kelley of Flesh Consumed/Dim Mak pointed me in the direction of the label...

3 - We(Flesh Consumed) played with you guys in Chicago, your home town, back on Bloodletting Tour 7 in 2010 and I was blown away.  What do you think makes a good live show?

Hell yeah, that show was a blast, I remember it well. We love energy on stage. For us, we like to get pretty aggressive on stage. Once that flow of energy and surge of intensity kick in, there’s no holding back, that’s for damn sure. Our shows have been known to get out of hand, haha.. Stage presence isn’t the most important thing, but it sure does help.

4 - If I had to label you guys besides utter chaos, completely tight with great production that I have compared to Gorguts’ album Obscura I would have to say extreme metal because you are one of those extremely deep and layered bands that you are constantly hearing new things with each listen and completely unique.. What influences Morgue Supplier?

Well, that is a great compliment, thank you. We definitely are influenced by many, many things and the multiple layers of our music is a testament to that. Personally and lyrically; society and just life and death in general tend to be what interests us when corresponding with this band, and it resonates in the lyrical output.  Musically we are influenced by a multitude of bands/artists/styles. We really have no limits... As long as it is dark as fuck we will incorporate it.

5 - What’s the most fucked up thing you’ve experienced on stage or at a show in general?

Wow, we’ve seen many a fucked up thing, haha. We used to have two vocalists up to about 2006. Moe was the other vocalist, and he used to throw up all over the stage and crowd sometimes. It was pretty fucking disgusting, haha.  & Let’s see, another one;  I was at a Deicide show in 1999 and a bunch of skinheads starting attacking our then bass player, Bill in the pit. I jumped in and punched a dude in the head super hard. My hand exploded and the bones were sticking through my skin. It was pretty fucked up... I drove myself to the hospital, had surgery, and had to learn how to use my hand again after months of therapy. I have a metal plate in there now.. Yeah, it fucking sucked, haha.

6 - You’ve played with a large number of big acts, which were your favorites and why?

Let’s see... Well, Gorguts was a huge honor to play with. Everyone in Morgue Supplier is a big fan of Gorguts, and we were really amped up for that one. Great show. Origin was on the bill as well. Vicious, vicious show.  Another great one was with Grave. It was super fucking packed, and the place was up for grabs. The energy level was way up there. Also, the shows we played with Anal Cunt were ALWAYS a total fucking blast. Just total insanity. Especially the one with Anal Cunt and Anal Blast. People were going fucking crazy. I can’t even explain it. Total chaos.

7 -  What lyrical themes do you explore?

Usually I tend to write about personal struggles, or the struggles of life and death in general. Also, corruption and hypocrisy are touched upon quite often as well. Rarely are my lyrics fictitious.

8 - What are your future plans for Morgue Supplier?

To promote the hell out of the upcoming eponymous album. We want to spread it EVERYWHERE and then also to start doing some great shows again.. It’s time. Also, we’re hoping to get on some good festivals.

9 - Would you consider this your debut full length even though you’ve had previous releases, in other words, is this a fresh start in a way?

I wouldn’t consider it our debut, no. I mean, we have been around for almost 20 years... But I would definitely consider it to be the next chapter. We are at our most vicious, yet diverse and proficient. The time is now for us. In 2016/2017 Morgue Supplier will leave a huge mark.

10 - You (Paul) have been doing vocals for over two decades, any advice for up and coming vocalists that look up to you?

Don’t smoke cigarettes(I did for a loooong time, and it just makes things harder). Use your stomach, not your throat. Don’t try to be the deepest, just try to be the best @ what your voice does naturally. Then morph it if you want, once you’ve mastered what you have naturally.

11 -  I love your guys sound and the whole package.  You’ve presented a great album for Obscure Musick to run with..what would you like to achieve with OM?

Thank you very much. We put a lot of work into it. We crafted this album. It is by far our finest moment, and we are very proud of it.

We would love for OM to help spread our name all over the world to the best of their ability. From there the music will speak for itself. We want promotion and exposure for the band.

12 - Tell us about the current lineup?

I, Paul Gillis am vocalist/lyricist/songwriter.

Eric Bauer is guitarist/songwriter

Stephen Reichelt is bassist/songwriter

We are currently in the process of looking for a new drummer. It is not an easy slot to fill, and we are being very picky as to whom we choose.

13 - What elements define the sound of Morgue Supplier?

A cohesion of intensity and musicality.

Our Facebook page describes us as:

“No gimmicks. No trends... Just pure, from the soul, intensity rendered at an expert level”.

I’d say that basically sums it up.

We take pride in sounding like ourselves. Fuck all these cookie-cutter bands out there doing the same shit. We want no part in that.

14 - How is the scene in your area? (shows, bands)

It is active. Lots of shows. We’ve played soooo many, with many killer bands coming through town. There are also a lot of good bands from Chicago. Although we don’t always necessarily fit stylistically.. Overall, I’d say the scene here is “ok”. Nothing to rave about, but not bad either... Plenty of killer people involved, but also plenty of retards as well.

15 - Busuk webzine is based out of Indonesia, what would you like to say to the Morgue Supplier fans and potential fans from that region of earth?

Hopefully you find what we do to your liking. If so, spread the word about us like the fucking plague. We want every motherfucker to know the name Morgue Supplier.

Interview with Lustravi by Corey Athos, 16 June 2015

Mr Athos: What is your band, where are from, and who plays what?

Morgan Weller (bass / vocals): We are ceremonial black metal from Panama City/Youngstown, FL. I play bass and do vocals, Cory is our drummer, and Geoff and Steve are on guitars.

Athos: What’s your band name, Who came up with it, And what does the name mean to you?

Morgan. I came up with it, it means to ceremonially purify or purification through cleanse by sacrifice in Latin. I grew up studying Latin and it just fit exactly what I wanted to do with this band.

That’s really thought out and quite a definition...Sometimes band names bring on their own separate definition with time…with some of my bands I've been hearing the name so much and it being associated with something else that it takes on its own definition..

Athos: How long have you been playing and was it hard to learn the double duty of vox and bass.. also Cory how long have you been playing?

 

Morgan: I've been playing bass about 11 years. It’s a lot like rubbing your stomach and patting your head at the same time. This is the first band that I've taken on all the vocals and I really enjoy it. It's been an interesting challenge for sure.

 

Cory (Lustravi drummer): About 12 years. My dad bought a drum kit and it was downhill from there.

Athos: Awesome! so you guys have some time under your belts. So what are your spiritual beliefs if any and do you feel about religious practice, isolation, and corruption?

Morgan: I say f*** the gods. I was made a Catholic in my younger years but I've always loathed it. It's absolutely vile to me. Especially from the female viewpoint, I couldn't ever imagine myself as a person who HAD to be submissive to the other sex. I couldn't imagine myself as being just a transaction. I'm an adult and I would never want someone to tell me what I can do and when. Abrahamic religion was created by idiots who want to control others. It creates slaves, not people who think for themselves.

Cory: I've never met Jesus but I'm not very fond of him.

Athos: Awesome! What do you guys do in your spare time beside jam?

Morgan: I train attack and service dogs mostly. It's a nice adrenaline rush being chased down by a dog that's trained to take you out. I also do tracking and search and rescue with my dogs and that keeps me pretty busy. I also have a few goats that are pretty cool. They're my metal lawn mowers but one tries to steal beer and smokes. That dude just wants to party.

Cory: I smoke weed and play video games. Nes or die

Athos: I feel ya on that...If the world was going to end what would be some of your final deeds?

Morgan: I'd spend it with my daughter. Go to back to my hometown in southern England and take her to see the cliffs and forests I grew up around and have one last pint at the Farmers arms in St Columb minor.

Cory: The world is going to end and I'm going to do exactly what I'm doing right now. Most likely with more weed.

Athos: Have you guys dropped an album and had a record deal before?

Morgan: I've done some independent stuff with other people's bands but nothing on a label and nothing I'm overly proud of. Lol but as far as Lustravi, no we have not. It's in the works though.

Athos: Can't wait to hear it..!! The songs that I had heard in the past have great structures and and raw bestial sound to it.. My label [Obscure Musick USA] is very interested in hearing some new material in a sound that completely satisfies you whether it's super polished, extremely necro and the spectrum in between..what can we expect from Lustravi's debut? Songs? Production? Lyrics? etc? Any change in tones instrumentally or vocally?

Morgan: Pretty much all of our songs sound different. I hit a lot of lows in "The 19th Key." That song is based on the very last page of the Lavey's satanic bible in the Enochian Keys. One song that hit close for me is "Sabrina" which is about my best friend who committed suicide a little bit over a year ago. She was an amazing person and I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to make a tribute to her. It's a pretty cool song. Reminds me a bit of Nargaroth but it fades out into a keyboard solo that I wrote right after I found out. A lot of going off in Latin. Other songs, I completely berate Abrahamic religions. One in particular "The Rites of the Goatchrist" takes a sexual turn. That song is pretty bass heavy so I dig it. I'd say that we'll definitely be somewhere in between straight raw and polished. I think a lot is lost, especially in black metal, if it's too polished. It would make the feel of the songs completely different for us.

Cory: You call that a knife..now this is a knife

Athos: Top 3 bands?

Morgan: Hard to narrow it down! Dissection, Peste Noire, and Nargaroth.

Cory: yeah that's tough but I'm gonna take a death metal turn and say Cannibal Corpse, Nile and Cryptopsy.

Athos: Badass, top 3 movies?

Morgan: Mars Attacks!, Masque of the Red Death, and any of The Lord of the Rings movies.

Cory: Semi pro, Forrest Gump and Goodfellas.

Athos: Worse 3 bands one more question I swear

Morgan: Besides Cinderella, that hair metal band. Haha hang on I have to think about this. Is it limited to rock/metal or can I throw other genres under the bus too? Nickelback. I really cannot stand Theory of a Dead Man. It just bothers me on a deep level. Like Chinese water torture. Really anything that is country or has country influences just drives me crazy.

Athos: Ok, that about wraps it up any shout outs?

Morgan: Just thanks to everyone that follows us on social media, listens to our music, shares us, and cares about what we're doing. It really means a lot to us.
